Not the best evening..
First topic message reminder :
Is about all I can say.....
Just taken Moo out for her usual tennis ball hunt. We get near the park and I see 7/8 kids (well 18/19) with a staff onlead. They shouted to put Moo on which I had already done and then proceeded to scream at me that the dog had already ripped another dogs face off today... and on and on, not what I expected to encounter we just diverted our route.
Moo was rather upset so we sat on the wall and I calmed her down, we carried on with our hunt. Unfortunately as we where leaving I was just about to put her back onlead and the same group of kids turned up, there dog was onlead but it all happened in a split second and it grabbed Moo by the face, I managed to grab there dog and put my hand in between the bite but I couldn't make it let go, quick thinking by them as there was a tap and they threw water over him, still didn't let go, I only had a fag which I pushed on the dogs nose and it let go.
Moo was squirting blood but the kids just rushed the dog off and apologized as they had forgotten to muzzle it.
Now Moo was off lead there's on, and I feel really really bad, she is pacing and has a cut on her cheek. One of the girls turned around and said she would do me in so to speak as I was crouched on the floor holding Moo, I pulled my phone out and said I would call the police and they all ran.
It has knocked my confidence and I am worried about Moo. Never been so worried in my life, I know she was off lead but she always is when up there. I feel I have let her down.

Brilliant! I've got mine on a thing you hang around your neck (can't remember what they're called - they break when pulled). I always remember mine as I've attached my keys and dog whistle to it.

Re: Not the best evening..
Oh Janey, just because Moo was off lead doesnt make this your fault. They shouldnt be forgetting the muzzle if their dog is that bad.
We all come across dogs on and off lead and i know like every1 here, you wouldnt of let moo off lead if you thought that dog was still about. That was just pure bad luck. These thugs must think they own the place. You have a right to walk your dog where you like, and you should be able to walk her and be safe with out threats. I would call the police, you were put in a terrible position. My heart goes out to you. Im sure Moo will work things out for her self, just leave pace, she'll be fine. xxxx

old sock with a quids worth of coppers in it just as good especially when applied accorss the temples
as for the lump, your right to go to the vet as you just cannot be 100% sure and waiting a while only to find out its an infection wouldnt be good. when marley got attacked and had his muzzle punctured it swelled up alot right around the wound. i salt waterd it for a couple of days and it went down quick and the wound healed good after around a week. but you never know what the dog had been eating or chewing on prior to the attack so i think your right getting her checked out. hopefully its nothing and that stunning girly of yours make a full recovery very soon bless her

Re: Not the best evening..
oh my god this is awful, they were totally in the wrong and need the police to sort them out as it wont be long before the dog does serious damage. Don't know if you're dog went up to theirs or not but still the dog should have been muzzled if it does this. Does not matter that yours was off lead. My dog as a puppy would have gone up to loads of dogs, I kept her on a lead but sometimes you do get caught out and it should be okay.
Hope you and moo are ok, horrible horrible people

Smart to go for the antibiotics. Better to be safe than sorry. Glad Moo is recovering! I'm sure will the antibiotics it will be all better in no time! Also glad that you got the personal alarm, do not forget to bring it with you each and every time when you are alone. Even if it seems safe you never know who/what you will run into as you have unfortunately learned :/ It could have been much worse though and luckily both you and Moo are okay!

They will give antibiotics if it is abscess and may lance it or help it along... It isn't horrible, just a pain and more meds.

It all pussed tonight and she scratched the scab off, it still looks clean so I am hoping its the infection coming out as she has been on the antibiotics for 2 days now.

Dempsey had the same thing when he was bitten. Try to keep it as clean as possible (salt water bathes) because the puss will attract bacteria & worsen the infection. If you bathe it regularly it should start to heal itself as the puss is draining away.
She's on antibiotics anyway, isn't she? That should stop any nasties.

I'd wait and see. Let the antibiotics finish (it was only a week's worth, wasn't it?). As long as the area is kept clean & looks healthy (if you see what I mean) then it should heal now the puss has been released. Try to make sure that it doesn't get all caked up in the surrounding fur as that would cause problems.
The first time it happened to Dempsey was a cheek one (nasty boxer x dog went for him) and it burst on the way home from the vets! That healed very quickly afterwards, but he was already on antibiotics for it. The second time was far more complicated. It was when the Dobe mauled his ear & he had a deep puncture wound at the base of his ear. That turned septic & he was on anti-bs, but just wouldn't heal. It kept weeping buckets & in the end they had to cut away the dead flesh from around it, leaving a huge hole! That's unusual, though, and normally once the abcess bursts it drains & heals well.

Thanks, I shall see how it goes, my worry is I can't get to the vets over the weekend.....
Suppose I see later but yes its a weeks course, so maybe normal? Xx

Re: Not the best evening..
I'm SO sorry to hear this Janey, but not entirely surprised; I'd be more surprised if a dog bite didn't get infected. Thank goodness you started the antibiotics yesterday, they should start kicking in very soon now.
You asked if any of us have experienced an abscess from a dog bite, and I have already explained about my Dobe's ear, and Caryll has explained her experiences. Caryll's advice is excellent (as always!) and imo the important things are that Moo has started her antibiotics, and that the infection has found a route of escape, both of which will speed Moo's recovery and make her feel more comfortable.
I'd keep the area clean and let the antibiotics do their work; I'd hazard a guess that the worst is over.
Give Moo a big hug from me and a big lick from Kuchar ((((((HUGS)))))

Re: Not the best evening..
There's an old saying "Better out, than in", and it's very true of an abcess - it's much better if it can burst & release the nasties so that the underlying skin can begin to heal.

Not all abscesses need antibiotics as long as they burst, drain out & are kept clean. But you're like me - better safe than sorry!

Re: Not the best evening..
puss/weeping isnt as bad as you first think as it indicates that the body is reacting to the wound. all that crap is spent white blood cells sent to fight infection. while it doesnt look or smell good its an indication of a healthy immune system and the body is fighting the infection.
as you have antibiotics it shouldnt be too long before it stops and starts to heal.
just likeyour doing and keeping it clean will speed it up no end
