I don't drive (I stopped learning when a wooden post jumped out in front of me & hit my car!), but the family (oh's) car is a Honda Civic. Nice little runner.

I have also never named a car. Currently driving a Ford Focus estate as Ledger refused to get into the back of my Citroen Berlingo so I swapped cars with my dad. I would really like a custom VW camper for the two of us

Re: so what do we drive
I've never named my cars either, except for the Fiat Uno I bought on my divorce - the reg was WLY and it just cried out to be called Willy!
Currently have a Vauxhall Astra.
The car I had most fun driving was an MGB GT, which was also one of the worst cars I've ever had, the other worst car was Willy.

I'm considerin the possibility of a Touran as an alternative to a Passat Est , but couldn't decide if the boot was enough , how do you find it , I;ve never actually owned a VW myself , always been fords and vauxhalls

I don't know much about VWs either Dave - but German engineering ist (generally) gut!
Go to a VW dealer and look over their cars, test drive one or two, only way to know if this is the way for you to go or not. ( I know you know this already so please forgive me, grandmothers and sucking eggs!)

Lots of the lads drive Passatts so got a good rep , I can pick up to 3 cars off the company car list and they will bring them out to me for a couple of days each to give them a good run out

Re: so what do we drive
personal choice, i'd steer clear of anything related to VW, if you want true german quality its boring BMW or the seemingly indestructable Mercedes.
if its the new passat your looking at, avoid the diesel engines, and the pertrol ones...
(VAG havent made a half decent product since the mid 90's, and even that stuff was questionable)

Everyone seems to rate them at work , certainly as good as the fords . BMW and Merc aren't really options for me though , I could downgrade to an A3
Other options for us now are the Insignia and new Zafira which looks like it might be interesting , didn't like the old Zafira though but only ever drove a 1.8 petrol and it needed another couple of gears , terrile on the motorway screaming its nuts off at 80.
We only do Diesel engines as well , and will only do German cars now (German company and big machine suppliers to all the big German motor companies)

Das ist sehr gut Dave!
Got to ask you Asa, if you avoid the diesel engines, and the petrol ones, what does your car run on? Or are you saying avoid a Passat, whatever?

I bought it from new 7 years ago and love it. We bought it when first grandson arrived and we knew we would be making 300 mile round trips on a regular basis. Its a 7 seater but I've never used the seats in the 'boot' so can't comment on them. Its been very reliable, passed all its MOTs - only drawback is as a diesel it can be a bit noisy and also likes a lot of oil - used to it now but took me by surprise initially. Boot is big but not as big as my daughter's Passat but if you fold down the back seats its huge and of course you get the height too. We have shifted all manner of furniture in it. My son has a blue motion Passat estate and he loves it, seems a bit strange when it cuts out at traffic lights though. Come to think of it, we are a VW family!!
Ah well, here endeth my Jeremy Clarkson bit.
