Advice needed
Hi
Looking for advice from more experienced dog owners.
As I posted on the forum Deez had an encounter with a hedgehog over a month ago, he has has his flea treatment on twice since then.
However we have found 4 or 5 small scabs around his head and legs, we can't see anything in his stupidly thick fur, and he isn't scratching any more than normal, and we haven't been bitten either, and he sleeps with us - could't get much closer!
When we were giving him cuddles on the sofa today, we noticed these dark lines, sort of 'under his armpits' on his front legs, now they may have been there since we rescued him in September, and we could just be over worried.

Any advice? He hates the vets, but we will get an appointment tomorrow if you think its anything serious.
We use frontline flea stuff, and he isn't due anymore for about 3 weeks.
Thank you.
Lisa, and Deez!

Re: Advice needed
Could just be skin markings but always best to check with vet. Scabs are probably left overs from hedgehog encounter. Beauty dog !

Thank you, I know I am probably being mildly neurotic, but I don't want him to be in any discomfort. Luckily, his experience with the hedgehog wasn't as bad as it could have been, he played with it, more than bit it. Not really sure he knew what it was! :-)

Re: Advice needed
The dark marks just look like skin pigmentation to me and as long as the scabs are healing and no more are coming I wouldn't worry about that either.
However, your clearly worried so if it will make you feel better and put your mind at ease, then go to the vets

I agree, a trip the vets will ease your worry

Re: Advice needed
All wild hedgehogs have fleas; however they are specific to hedgehogs & don't live on other animals! They can bite another animal & cause irritation, but that's it - they won't breed & multiply on the other animal.
The marks you show look like a 'tide mark' - ie a line of dirt! It certainly isn't anything to do with the hedgy!
The only other thing that springs to mind is ringworm, but then he'd be scratching!

Thank you. I didn't know that about hedgehog fleas! :-)
The 'tide marks' will be a result of this mornings big walk.
Thank you for all your help, Deez is our first dog, and we weren't sure where to go for advice.
Top work! :-)

Keep an eye on it - if it starts to look sore or scabby then have a word with your vet, but it doesn't sound like it's too much to worry about!

Frontline is rubbish, research has found that many fleas have simply become immune to it. If you are going to use anything (I only de-flea when they have them, which is very very rarely) I use advocate. Maybe try this and see if it makes a difference. It might just be that he is very slightly allergic to something as the scratches don't look bad he just looks a bit pink

Re: Advice needed
Update-
After Deez got a few more scabs, we went to the vets this morning, and he is allergic to midgy bites, and the scabs are the reaction. The vet said its quite common for bull breeds to have this allergy, and as we walk Deez round a lake at twice a day, plus big country walks he will have got them then.
The vet said he isn't in too much discomfort, but if he gets more we can give him piriton 4 mg for his itchy skin.
Problem solved, happy owner and happy Staffie!

Re: Advice needed
Oh that's good at least you know what it is and can give him something for it. I give Vinnie Piriton now and again as we also are in the woods and by water such a lot.
