Had to go on stupid detox :(
I've had a really bad stomach for a month (maybe slightly over) and I think we've finally figured out that I'm probably fat intolerant. Up until recently, I'd had little to no real fat in my diet for over a year. Recently I've started eating a little more and it seems like my stomach plays up after I eat stuff like butter, cheese and birthday cake. I know I'm not lactose intolerant, as I'm fine with milk and low-fat cheese.
I've been okay for most of this week, but I had a bad stomach the day after my birthday - when I'd eaten birthday cake. After that passed, I was fine for another couple of days. Then I had cheese with my dinner, then more cheese the next day in a sandwich, and got another bad tummy.
So I've been snacking on Water Crackers for 24 hours and I feel fine now. Going to start gradually reintroducing food groups to make sure.
I've been falling apart lately!

Bless you lot, I am a very fussy eater but can eat what I want when I want, usually a large bowl of pasta with a cheese sauce and bacon, my culinary skills are exceptional

Re: Had to go on stupid detox :(
Oh poor Eleanor, Sazzle and Inez - I do hope you get your tummies sorted out soon.
I do think that our systems get used to going without one certain substance or another, and then react violently when it's re-introduced. For example, my niece went vegetarian for about two years, then got over her pig obsession (which I think is what started her on the veggie diet) and ate a nice, big juicy steak. Oh BOY was she ill!
Eleanor, just a thought, and I don't want to scare-monger - but animal fats need bile to break them down and if you are a vegetarian or vegan and have lately started ingesting animal fat again after a break of some time, it could just remotely be possible that your gall bladder either got used to not having to produce bile and therefore the animal fat is passing unprocessed through your system and causing havoc, and/or you have a gall-stone which is preventing the bile from doing its job. If I were you I'd just google the subject to eliminate it from my enquiries!

I get that way but I think it's when I eat too much dairy. I can only tolerate a small amount.

I don't eat animal fat at all I've been a vegetarian all my life as well, so I don't think it would cause problems after so much time. I've looked it up though and it's actually quite interesting! Thanks!

I'm feeling alright at the moment. Bit uncomfortable during the barbecue, but I think that was just because I'd been having bland food for 24 hours, so my stomach wasn't expecting anything else.

Re: Had to go on stupid detox :(
Ok, ignoring the makin bacon puns...........
We all ate meat up until about 15 years ago, although Eleanor & her brother never did actually like meat & rarely ate it. Even then we only ate chicken & processed meat - we'd given up beef, pork & lamb many years before.
We all gave up meat voluntarily - even as young as the kids were then they knew they didn't want it, and we've never missed it, so I don't think the lack of animal fats in the diet has any bearing at all on Eleanor's problems.
Basically she'd been on an exclusion diet for a year or more, really cutting all fat out of her diet (or at least as much as possible) and lately she's been eating a bit more. I just think her metabolism hasn't adjusted yet.

I think it's just the lack of fat in her diet and then the sudden intake again just has settled well

Eleanor, what Lynda said about your gallbladder may well be worth looking into. Whereabouts in your stomach does it hurt? Having recently been told I've got to have mine out, I've been reading up on it quite a lot and with you saying that dairy products cause a flare-up, that does sound familiar. Basically, anything with fat in it causes the gallbladder to contract, and if there's a stone trying to pass though it at the time then it causes the pain as obviously the contractions are restricted by the stone.
When mine starts playing up, I get a very intense pain in the top left of my abdomen, just below the ribs, and a corresponding pain in my back (although today, it's been on the upper right, probably because I haven't eaten).
A tip though: Don't Google Image search 'gallstones', it wasn't pretty
Feel better soon

Re: Had to go on stupid detox :(
Hope you get your tummy troubles sorted soon >< I went through the process of exclusionary diets a long time ago to fix tummy issues - it isn't much fun while it was happening but was worth it in the end.
I was vegan for a very long time (now vegetarian after re-introduced myself to the wonderful world of milk, cheese, chocolate etc a few years ago) .... most people would be understanding of the no meat bit but could never get the no lollies part

Re: Had to go on stupid detox :(
What a lovely conversation! Everybody discussing my bowel movements!
It's an upset stomach sort of pain. As in, you poop and it goes away. A bit like food poisoning. There's no stabbing pain or anything like that. Just the normal pain you get when you have a bad stomach, only it happens each time I have fatty foods.
Thanks! Yeah, a lot of people assume that vegans just survive off of grass and leaves. I think it's quite a difficult thing to wrap your mind around unless you actually do it.

Re: Had to go on stupid detox :(
ah Eleanor, we're concerned for you! and certainly don't want to embarrass you. but, since you bring the matter up (sorry if there's any pun there ) , I was reading that you were having pain in your stomach (stomach, as in where the food first goes when you swallow it), which is why I thought of gall-bladder, and not - ummm - lower down, which I would call abdominal. In which case, if it were me, I would want to rule out certain intestinal disorders (like coeliac or chrohns) and if the symptoms didn't fit, then I'd just relax and say to myself my guts aren't used to animal fats so either I bully them into submission or give up eating the fats.
listen to your mum - she's probably right, mums usually are! Hoping you're feeling better today ><

The stomach pains are only when I eat too much spicy foods. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that. The bad stomach I was referring to was lower down.
