Overweight Rotty
So a lot of you know that my mum owns a beautiful rottweiler called Rumor but it seems Rumor is having serious problems regarding her weight. When she first got Rumor she was severly underwieght but seemed so happy throwing herself around and going for massive runs on the beach and now that shes been neutered the weight has piled on casusing her to run out of breath quite quickly on her walks, she doenst run anymore, and the most she does when playin with other dogs is lift her paw.
Mums not to computer literate so im asking on her behalf....what can she do to drop Rumor's weight, she's never had this problem with any other dog. She mentioned Rumor was on food from Tesco and she has half her recommended amount (this is what the vets advised). Ive told her to change the food as it can make a big impact and increase her walks, but if shes struggling to walk and run then its hard to extend the walks without making her uncomfortable.
She doesnt get any fatty treats, and shes very picky anyway.

Better food and up the exersize, they do tend to put on weight when neutered (never noticed it with mine), does she swim at all? Fantastic exersize, make walking more fun so is active, I doubt I could suggest anything you haven't thought of already Xx

Re: Overweight Rotty
Less food more walking.. got to take the exercise easy while she is still carrying the weight.. but upping the walks will help until she starts to shed the pound, then she will become more active or her own accord. lovely doggy. x

Agree with Pag. While she's still carrying around a jelly belly, extra exercise is going to make her achey and tired. It's best to change the diet first (slowly) and then gradually build up the exercise.
She's a beauty by the way!

Re: Overweight Rotty
Agree with above, gradually change over to a better quality food and gently up the exercise. Swimming would be a great way to do this as it has less stress on the joints.

Definitely! Swimming is great exercise! It keeps the body temperature down as well.

Re: Overweight Rotty
Me n Jen had a near death experience with a Rottie last year
We went to PAH to pick up some stuff for the kids and there was a couple of ladies sat outside at a table raising money for the local Rottie rescue , anyway they released this thing and we nearly got licked to death.

I dont know which is better...rotty kisses or staffy kisses!
Id love another rotty, but theres no way it could keep up with Shéara, they're such an amazing breed

I did mention this, but wasnt entirely sure if you could use it for weight loss alone? I can imagine it wouldnt be cheap, ill look into it now, thanks ella

some actually aren't to expensive, obviously a change of diet along with walks will help, but hydrotherapy is so gentle on their joints which is normally a problem with overweight dogs and really helps them loose weight

Prices arnt too bad to be honest and theres a place only 25 mins away so not to far to travel, i really think Rumor wil benefit hydrotherapy as well as her walks though...her joints are clicking away when she stands up and its something different for her to do. Ive metioned the wainwrights light so i think she will be going on that.
