Strange Behavior Empty Strange Behavior

Post by RILEY82 Sun May 19 2013, 18:40

Hi my partner and i are new to this site,

we have a 9 month old staffy called Teya she is a dark tiger brindle.

we are having some problems with her chasing her bits and tail and yelping for no reason at all. we just took her to the ponds near us and she went for a swim as she usually does but this time she kept swimming in circles the would not respond to us calling her in which is very unlike her.
She is eating and drinking fine tho
also she will never sit still even in the house she is trying to chase her tail or bits and the out of the blue she will yelp again.

i hope someone could help us out with this.

p.s she has been health checked and there is nothing wrong with her.

Sounds worrying for you!

Could you tell me what your girl is fed on? Also, has the vet checked her anal glands? Has her health changed in any other way?

Personally I'd ditch the Advocate unless there's a specific reason you're using it. Advocate can cause localised pain/itching.

What food does she have?

Advocate is very good for getting rid of fleas, but if your dog doesn't have fleas, why use it? You vet will tell it's preventative, and maybe it is. But I've never seen a flea on Dempsey & I've never used Advocate. Wink

On the other hand, my boss's GSD was treated with Advocate every month for the first 2 years & had very bad skin sensitivity problems...until they stopped using it!

I have Rolo on Comfortis flea treatment from the vets, I don't use it as regularly as the vet would want me to, but Rolo doesn't/has never had fleas. I use it when he's due to go to kennels mainly, and that's a preventative measure. He's never had a problem with it and he takes the little tablet easily. Like Caryll, I don't like to use Advocate i've seen a few dogs with which it hasn't agreed with and Frontline seldom seems to work these days.
Good luck Smile

Why use a flea treatment when your dog doesn't have fleas?

The Milbemax 3 monthly will take care of the worms & personally I'd leave it at that.

I have not experienced this behaviour in my dog myself but I know others on this forum have and I am sure they will be along shortly!

I suppose the one thing I would say is that once they get into "puberty" dogs can behave weirdly or annoyingly or test your boundaries a lot for quite a few months. I think the second thing I would say is do not worry, you will sort this, I'm sure. Your staying calm and positive will help your dog more than anything. I'm impressed she swims. Mine won't even dip his paws in.

Does she seem anxious or unhappy or more giddy and happy?

But again, why treat for soemthing your dog doesnt have? milbemax is a good wormer, and treats worms. If your dog doesnt have ear mites lice or mange then why bung chemicals into them anyway? ive never used any flea treatment for lexi cause shes never had a flea before, would you treat yourself for headlice if you didnt have them?

As Hayley says, if your dog doesn't have fleas, why de flea it? Also, you don't need to protect against mange. If your dog gets it, then treat it but the chances of getting it are slim. We don't get heartworm in the UK, and Milbemax protects against lungworm (and all the other worms including tapeworm which Advocate doesn't cover).

So, all in all, Advocate isn't needed if you use Milbemax, which the op does.
