Surprised Strange behavior please help

Post by Joypuppy Thu Oct 09 2014, 17:21

Hi everyone,

Today i had a strange behavior from Joy,my 1 year old mixed Staffy that i have since she was 9 months old.

I explain:

This morning i was on the phone "arguing" with someone and was somehow upset/angry with this person.
When i hanged up Joy was nowhere to be found even after calling her a few times she was not showing up.
Normally she s always at my foot.

I finally found her in the laundry room behind the clothes laying down. The whole day she is being quiet, she did not even chew on the carpet (first time ever!)!!

I know that dogs sense feeling but i was wondering because i took her from the shelter as her previous owner abandoned her in the street at the age of 7 months.
She was chipped but the shelter personnel will not give me any info on the previous "owners".

Could it be that the previous owner mistreated her as i never saw her literally hiding from me and staying away from me...
Or it was just that she saw me upset and decided not get in the way today?

Thanks in advance for all your reaction.
Cheers

Sounds as tho the dog has been mistreated tbh. They get a good sense of your moods and actions as well tho

Maybe she had a bad time before but they can be very sensitive to loud voices and anger even if they've had no previous experience and as you say can just take themselves away from it. Distraction with treats or toys might help.

They do pick up on mood changes and loud voices etc. it doesn't mean that she has been mistreated she might have just been a little scared of your voice. My Flo doesn't like me play fighting with my teenage lads so it's not that unusual really.

I'm sure that she will settle down soon enough Smile

Ledger was the same when my neighbours used to argue he would go to the farthest corner and shake, and he gets so upset when my brother watches football and shouts at the tv. I think his is due to previous experience (he was 2 when I rescued him) the other morning I was rushing to get us out of the house and as I picked up his lead I knocked half the stuff off the table and naturally swore in frustration I was devastated as Ledger properly cowered back away into the wall and turned his head away from me

If Joy did pick up on your anger she may have been a bit confused if there was no one else in the house she may have thought that it was aimed at her, the dog most likely doesnt know that there was someone on the other end of the phone.

Stu makes a good point above, it could have been confusion. They are simple little things they don't always understand the way us humans are Smile It doesn't necessarily mean she was mistreated before. I've had Axl since he was 8 weeks old and he will leave the room if I drop something on the floor Big Grin
