Off lead play - how much is okay?
Just a quick question ..
Chiquito went for his first day out on the common today. Walked him on lead for about 20 minutes, then met another puppy and went to the leash free area for a play. Chiquito ran around playing off lead with the puppy and 2 other dogs for about an hour. He obviously used plenty of energy up, as he has been sleeping nearly all afternoon and even slept through dinner!
I know the walking needs to be limited to about 5 minutes for each month .. I am wondering do I need to limit the amount of time he plays like this as well though?
(Don't mean to sound daft ... I know play is good, just don't want to do anything that might hurt him!!)

Thanks Dave
Thought that might be the case, but seeing as he is semi comatose tonight I thought I had better check to make sure

as long as it is just play and not off lead rock climbing or anything you will be fine. I used to do long off lead play periods so we could take them both out together and Tilly wasn't missing out

It is a good idea - he really enjoyed it, and I can't believe how tired it has made him!
If I take him out for a play on the long line does the same apply? I want to take him to the dog beach for a play next week but don't trust his recall enough to let him off lead there yet.

long line is fine as long as he is roaming under his own steam

Agree with it being OK as long as he's resting. Unless he looks exhausted but is forcing himself to carry on, obviously but they will stop and rest when they need to.
