Need help with his food
Hello, so we got Eukanuba dog food for medium breed adult and it says 15kg dogs should eat from 180-200grams a day and 20kg should eat 220-245grams.
I don't want Dragon to be 20kg so I choose to feed him 200grams a day, since he has 2 meals a day he will eat 100grams per meal which equals to 200grams a day, we slowly introducing him to the food and we just got some new scales to weigh his food... But 100grams is hardly any food? Am I meant to add anything else to the food or just feed him the 100grams per meal and leave it at that? Just confused if I am meant to add anything because it smells like he will hardly be eating

Re: Need help with his food
How much does he weigh now? If you feed him the advised amount for his weight with sufficient exercise he should not gain any?

Re: Need help with his food
He weights 16kg so the 200g is the right amount per day my concern is that it's not enough food? It's about like 3 hands full? I don't mind if he gains some weight as long as its not to much if he doesn't go past 20kg I'm happy just thinking its hardly anything and if anything it will make him lose weight...

Re: Need help with his food
If that's what they recommend then I think it should be OK, just keep a close eye and if he starts to loose weight up it a little bit.
Alot of people seem to add raw egg to the dry food, or you can add some tinned sardines in oil or tomato sauce.
Hope this helps, sure someone else will be able to offer more advise

Re: Need help with his food
I might add raw eggs once he starts eating the new food without his old food, on the website it says to gradually introduce the food for the period of 4 days.. After that just going to give him his new food and see how it goes but will probably add an egg on his second feeding
Thanks, I just wasn't sure if I was meant to add anything to the food as it seemed like there was hardly any food.

Why the worry about 20kg Vinnie is 24kg and only 21 months old but hasnt gained the last two visits at the vets. He is in fine form at this weight and very healthy. I must say 200g a day seems very little to me.

Re: Need help with his food
I would introduce it over atleast a week to make sure he doesn't get an upset tummy

Darcy is 9 1/2 months and weighs 14.9 kg she has 240g kibble daily, 200g seems like small amount. I agree with sazzle re time of introduction to new food best to do it over a week or so

Don't take me the wrong way I love how Vinnie looks but Dragon is not the same, if he was 20kg he would look very fat he already looks fat to me at 15kg now imagine another 5kg added, but we haven't been feeding him an amazing food as we didn't have the money to buy it but now we do, his other food had hardly any protein and had a lot of fat, maybe with this food it won't make him look as fat and it will define more his muscles has he won't be putting on to much fat.inez maria wrote:Why the worry about 20kg Vinnie is 24kg and only 21 months old but hasnt gained the last two visits at the vets. I think that's how it works anyway, it's like if a human eats junk food that contains a lot of fat they will have a higher % of body fat than a person that eats the same and weighs the same but eats healthy
I will start with 200g a day and see how it turns out and see if I need to up his food.

I can see what your saying I think as you said you have to see how it goes perhaps the better quality food will be more productive.DragonTheStaffie wrote:Don't take me the wrong way I love how Vinnie looks but Dragon is not the same, if he was 20kg he would look very fat he already looks fat to me at 15kg now imagine another 5kg added, but we haven't been feeding him an amazing food as we didn't have the money to buy it but now we do, his other food had hardly any protein and had a lot of fat, maybe with this food it won't make him look as fat and it will define more his muscles has he won't be putting on to much fat.inez maria wrote:Why the worry about 20kg Vinnie is 24kg and only 21 months old but hasnt gained the last two visits at the vets. Yea just see if he loses weight or starts to look skinny, if he does then up his food a bitinez maria wrote:I can see what your saying I think as you said you have to see how it goes perhaps the better quality food will be more productive.DragonTheStaffie wrote:Don't take me the wrong way I love how Vinnie looks but Dragon is not the same, if he was 20kg he would look very fat he already looks fat to me at 15kg now imagine another 5kg added, but we haven't been feeding him an amazing food as we didn't have the money to buy it but now we do, his other food had hardly any protein and had a lot of fat, maybe with this food it won't make him look as fat and it will define more his muscles has he won't be putting on to much fat.inez maria wrote:Why the worry about 20kg Vinnie is 24kg and only 21 months old but hasnt gained the last two visits at the vets. Re: Need help with his food
The amount if kibble will depend on the brand, the better quality kibble the less off it they need! Maxi is 20kg as well and 175g (per day) is recommended for that of the one I feed her. But I give her 150g cause I want her to loose weight. I felt the same as you that it's hardly any food but she seems fine and not hungry on it! If your worried you can add shredded carrots for example, that will fill them up but not add calories. If maxi has more exercise than normal one day I usually give her a little bit more food

Very good point about the quality of the food.Annie and Maxi wrote:The amount if kibble will depend on the brand, the better quality kibble the less off it they need! Re: Need help with his food
I see, well that explains it I was just worried that it wasn't enough but I will go by what's recommended at the moment and see if he outs on or loses weight and then decide if I need to add or remove some food.Annie and Maxi wrote:The amount if kibble will depend on the brand, the better quality kibble the less off it they need! He's been eating fine which is a surprise because he's fussy with food lol we'll see how he gets on when there's none of his old food though
