Treats Empty Treats

Post by Batman Attacks Tue Apr 23 2013, 15:32

So, I am looking after some dogs for some experience and I was wondering, what are the best treats for dogs?

In terms of both meats, and for their gums/breath et cetera.

I make my own treats with my dehydrator so they get dried, liver, heart, fish, skin etc etc

They get raw bones as part of their diet anyway so thats keeps their teeth clean anyway!

So I should go to my local butchers and ask for bones and fish/meats?

you can ask yes, but they may offer you 'marrow' bones which are not what you want, they are large weight baring bones which are too dense.

Ask for some lamb or chicken bones, like lamb spine or ribs, and make sure they are raw Smile

i would always recommend to go for as natural a treat as you can, none of those that are full of colourings and e numbers! unless you want hyper dogs Wink

if there is bones in it it must be raw!

If you buy boneless chicken it's up to you if you want to give it raw or cooked

because cooked bones are very very dangerous, they splitter and become very brittle, you should never feed cooked bones even the ones in pets shops, they have scarily killed dogs!

For training treats, I use pieces of ham, chicken, hotdogs, etc. Big Grin

Small pieces of hot dog sausage are very convenient. Also chopped up and dried liver ( which I prefer ). For training I use both of the above plus cooked chicken pieces and cheese ( sparingly as it's high in calories ).

Seriously guys. I bought some meat from the butchers and I boiled it a little to get the juices into a water...put the water out...and the meat in a seperate bowl. They loved them!

But for chicken. Would I leave it raw? Cut it up? And place it out? Or...?

Any pics? We like pics, don't you know? Big Grin

For chicken, if it has any bones in it, leave it raw without a doubt. If there are no bones, you can cook it or leave it raw.

anything meat wise with bones in leave raw, boneless meat it's up to you whether you have it raw or cooked

For training treats it is normally easier to cook the boneless meat

One female staffordshire bull terrier female called Lucky. (Deaf)
One male staffy cross spaniel.

I have them to get some experience to see if I can handle them and so far I am teaching them a lot of stuff including routines and tricks despite her being deaf. Though I do have one question. Why does she seem to keep trying to mount him? Straight Face. Also, I really do feel bad for them as she seems to have been mistreated a little with few walks. For example her nails are way overgrown so they bleed when she walks (Getting them done tomorrow). Also her paw is scrapped...like the black stuff she uses to grip? Straight Face. But I am feeding them well...and she's bulking up quite a bit since she was quite skinny plus...she seems happier Big Grin

The mounting can be dominance or over-excitement. I wouldn't encourage it to be honest, because even if he's OK with it, other dogs may not tolerate it.

Yeah she does seem more dominant than him for example if you throw them a bone...she will go for his despite having her own...and stake her claim to it and he'll walk off...but I have been working on that Smile
