Slip lead?
Been to the vets with Barney today to get him weighed and ask about other things, and they said he would be better on a slip lead?
What are people's opinions on slip leads? Are they any good? Have had Barney on a harness to control his pulling, but it does tend to rub under his leg.

Re: Slip lead?
No way, I hate them.
They are ok for training purposes if they are really needed, but no good for a powerful dog that could potentially hurt themself from pulling.
A head collar, or Canny Collar, might be a good option. Or a non pull harness

I was wary when she mentioned it. He has a halti harness now, but it rubs under his leg. He has calmed down on it though.

Re: Slip lead?
I had a smaller terrier that never pulled before Logan, she always walked off lead. I brought a slip lead on walks because they are quick to pop on and off when needed.
But I think the Halti is a much better idea

Is there a harness padded on both sides?

Re: Slip lead?
You should never use a slip lead on a real puller! It'll damage his throat! They're also very unsafe because if they go loose (which they should be) he can easily pull his head out & be off after whatever interests him!
I have 3 of them for Dempsey, but they were only used for showing, and even then only when we were actually in the show ring.
What have you done so far to stop the pulling?

Have heard heaps of good things about this harness, seems super comfy and I can't imagine that it will rub. There is heaps of different colours available and Staffy's are generally a size 4 or 5.

We've tried the standing still thing, and now the harness.

Have you tried the turning the other way method?

Re: Slip lead?
Yep I have, he just stands still and the lead is still tense.

Re: Slip lead?
But you shouldn't give him the chance to just stand still!
As soon as he pulls ahead, turn around & carry on walking. The second the lead tightens, give him a little tug & say "Heel" or whatever word you use & keep walking. The second he reaches your side, turn & walk the other way using the same command & little tug. Then when he reaches you, praise him & give him a treat.
If you do that every time he pulls ahead he'll soon get the message!

Re: Slip lead?
If you are gonna use a slip lead it should be for training only and it should not be a general walking tool that is constantly tight on their neck it should be used to give a quick correction.
A lot of people seems to think they put on a slip chain and walk and the dog will stop pulling, it wont. It will get used to the feeling of the chain tight and they can possible injure themselves over time.
I personally used a slip chain to train Maxi to heel and not pull but then worked my way to using a regular collar when we walk. If you end up using one you do a similar thing as you have and as soon as there is tension on the lead or as soon as she is in front of you (if you want a perfect heel on you left side) you give a QUICK correction with the chain and then release straight away and get the dog next to you and then keep on walking (or you can do the turning around thing). The chain should be loose at all other times when walking!! Make sure you get someone to show you how to fit it and use it.

I tried him with the harness in that photo recently, he still pulls. So will have to work on him more when he's out. Thanks for everyone's help!

Re: Slip lead?
I say it about 20 times a day, but NEVER take training or behavioural advice from a vet.

I wasn't keen when they said it to me, don't want anything that could hurt him.

Re: Slip lead?
We got Rocky the EzyDog harness, in fact he has 2 now. I also recently treated him to the Ezydog collar which I now tend to use more often than the harness which he still wears for the seat belt clip when in the car. I have found when the lead is attached to the collar that he walks much better.
You may want to consider a wide collar too, this is the one Rocky has:

He's wearing an ezydog collar at the moment, we got him the chocolate one. Are they pretty sturdy if a dog was to pull? I.e the Velcro won't come off and he'll run off lol.
