slip leads
Just wondered what peoples views are with these type of leads. We have been using this lead by ruff wear http://www.ruffwear.com/Just-a-Cinch-Rope-Dog-Leash in the hope of training toby not to pull but nothing seems to be happeng. We have tried all the technics but no luck. Really worried that we are harming his poor little throat. Thinking a harness may be better for him.

Re: slip leads
Forget that lead and buy this:
http://www.petsathome.com/shop/stop-pull-harness-for-dogs-by-pets-at-home-14475
This has stopped Zeus pulling almost instantly, when he reaches the end of the lead, he stops and doesnt try to pull forward. Worked a treat.

Can't be of any use because I've never used one of those leads before, but how does that harness stop the dog from pulling?

You can attach any lead you want on it, my mum takes him on a short lead, I take him on an extendable lead. The harness closes slightly on their chest when they try to pull forward.

Re: slip leads
Those harnesses are ok, they do help with pulling. Slip leads can hurt a puller dog's throat. He might be better with a normal collar and a halti. Staffords have sensitive throats

Re: slip leads
I use slip leads from time-to-time - they have their place - but you can't really beat a properly fitted and secure collar and separate lead, and teaching the dog to walk to heel rather than letting it go to the end of the lead each time and pull.

Re: slip leads
I have tried all sorts of harnesses / devices for Roxie but to no avail. There is no quick fix to stop pulling, just determined training. I have never, however, used a slip lead as when they pull, they really pull and I would not want to do any damage to the neck / throat. I used the stop, start technique. She does still pull if she sees a cat but generally, after lots of hard work, she now walks beside me, sits at the road and waits in a sit position when I remove the lead and only runs into the park / field when I give the command. I do always use a harness, with a short lead for control when walking along roadsides and extendable lead when out in the fields until I am sure there is no wildlife lurking before she is let off to play with Maisey.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: slip leads
The only time I would use a slip lead is on an already trained dog - I used one for Dempsey in the show ring.

Re: slip leads
Thanks everyone. Trying hard to train him to walk on the lead but him choking becomes too much. Defo off to the shops to get a harness, that way we can spend longer trying to get him to walk on the lead.

What have you already done to stop the pulling?
