Lanky Stage
Is it normal for Staffy pups to go through a lanky stage? Zeke is now 16 weeks but really doesn't look it as he's tall he looks a lot older but still has puppy eyes. Zeke has long legs, massive feet, long tail, small head and round belly. He looks so out of proportion, his head really needs to start growing haha even his ears or growing faster than his head and well his man parts are like tiny little peanuts . Hope this is normal. I think Zeke is going to be one of those long legged staffs not the short ones. What where your experiences of having a pup and how did they grow?

Re: Lanky Stage
They all go through an akward looking phase. As a general rule they grow in height the forst year and then in width and muscle for the next two.

Re: Lanky Stage
Yep very normal and as J said they don't really start to fill out until after a year. Logan was very lanky at a stage, all legs. But he is filling out well now

Yeah, they all go through the lanky stage, it's perfectly normal, they stay like that for the first year or so

Re: Lanky Stage
yep buck is exactly the same age and you described him perfectly haha
his ears are too big for his head
his paws are too big for his legs
his head is really small compared to his body
hes pretty skinny
hes also bang on the maximum height for the breed standard so its looking like hes gonna be a tall one too
my mum has a jack russell and when they chase eachother around she regularly manages to turn buck over because his centre of gravity is all wrong as hes so out of proportion lol
no doubt that hes gonna fill out though as his dad was built like a tank haha

Re: Lanky Stage
yeah youll see all sorts of diff looks lol. laska is 11 months now and has just had a growth spurt on her legs. I had a week off three weeks ago and think the excersise triggerd it. she is also blowing her coat and has just burnt all her puppy fat off in favour of two massivly muscled rear legs while the front are still skinney. she looks a right odd bod at the moment.

A lot of young dogs (and older dogs too sometimes) hump when they are over excited. It can be a show of dominance. Just make sure it isn't upsetting your other dog and if/when it is stop it and correct Zeke with a firm "no".

Not too bad then, just watch though as you said. Because a puppy can be very irritating to some older dogs and it can eventually get to be too much for them. It's a lot easier to prevent problems than fix them if they arise I find.
However, again, very normal behaviour and nothing to really worry about.

Re: Lanky Stage
Yes they look so funny! Hi Adam, Coco looks like she is going through an arkward phase too in your profile pic! Difficult to say since she is still so young how big she is going to be. I would wait til she is 6/7 months and then measure her at the shoulders in inches. Then you will have a bit more of an idea how big she is going to be. However they keep growing up til about 14months.

Thank you her parents where both short and stocky but her legs seem to be a bit long and was wondering if that is right because we have never owed a staffy before

Re: Lanky Stage
It sounds about right they get very leggy at a stage, it looks very out of place, but they grow into it nicely Why not pop over and say hi?
