Erection for 4 hours!!
Can anyone please advise of what I can do about this?
My dog has had an erection for 4 hours now. It's red and swollen and looks as though its lost all lube to be able to go back in again. Should I be worried?
Is this normal?
Thanks

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
If his penis is dry, that is likely to affect his ability to retract it. Some people find that rubbing some vaseline on it and rubbing the area lightly can help, though if you're not comfortable with it, you may need to call a vet for advice.
Cold compresses may also help. The moisture from the outside of an ice pack may also help to moisten it. Don't apply ice directly to it, though, as this could result in tissue damage.

Hmm might be worth a call to the vets, it can get sore being out for that long. Some dogs need help putting it bk in.
I think upto a hour is ok, anything over that... Call the vet.

have you tried cold water on it?

well when you think about the cold water lubes it a bit but takes the swelling down which is the main thing to allow it to go back in

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
Try smearing some vaseline over it & ease the foreskin back if at all possible. If you can't do it pretty quickly you should consult a vet as your dog could do some serious damage to himself otherwise.

When they tied ? They are supposed to 'get stuck' sometimes upto an hour.

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
If none of the suggestions work within the next hour, I think you should consult an emergency vet. If left untreated, such a condition could become painful for the dog. A vet will be able to treat it quickly.
Best of luck to you! And thank you for asking!

If you don't have a cold compress, by the way, a cool bath can help. At any rate, you may want to consult a vet if you do manage to return it to normal, just to make sure no damage has been done.

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
Id definitely recommend the vaseline. Alfie has this problem but its constant - vaseline helped a little bit but as his is out all the time it wasnt a permanant solution. May help for you though!

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
Definately call a vet. It can be serious if left stuck out too long, the blood won't circulate to the penis and worse case scenario, the end of the penis will start to die! I have seen this happen once, not a pretty sight!

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
Oh dear, something else I didn't know could happen to male dogs.
Is this a common occurence? And is neutering likely to prevent it?

Males will usually..sort themselves...out
Staffys unfortunately have issue getting there cause of their build and being overweight can really effect this too.

I wouldn't say it's that common, but it isn't rare. Neutering won't have any (or very little) effect. Same as with humping - they either do it or they don't!

Although it's true that they usually sort themselves out, it shouldn't take more than 15 - 20 minutes. Four hours is way too long, and could cause injury.
Their build & weight shouldn't have any effect on it whatsoever.

Unless a male is kept around intact females that will go into heat around him and he will have no access to or there are females in the area that are intact then it is less likely to occur.
Neutering can definitely help prevent it as it reduces the hormones and once the hormones leave the system a male is not going to get an erection every time an intact female goes into heat which is often what can occur. Some males will get overly excited when a female is in heat around them that they do not have access to and then their penis will swell and get stuck out. Or it will not retract after copulation which is more rare.
Most of the time with a little lubrication you should be able to get it back into the sheath, but after an hour or so the dog needs to see a vet. The penis will dry out and it is prone to infection as well being exposed. We had a case at an ER vet clinic I worked at where a dog ended up needing surgery as the owner waited too long to bring his dog in.

Yes, but Alfie didn't have this - this is a full swollen erection that can't go back because it's too engorged to fit inside the sheath. It happens occasionally, even in neutered dogs.

This is exactly what Alfie has

Well yes it is. No ones sure how it happened but it "cant go back because its too engorged to fit inside the sheath" so yeah, same thing

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
From what I remember from your posts, Ellie, Alfie's penis was only partly out of the sheath, and it was sorted out by the vet at the same time as his castration.
Anyway, that doesn't help the op, and castration isn't guaranteed to make a difference to humping. Sometimes it does, but very often it doesn't.

Re: Erection for 4 hours!!
Sorry Caryll but you remember wrongly - it hasnt been sorted, he will more than likely need an operation. Now it has gone in a lot and that was due to the castration - as I said.

Sorry, I thought the vet had fixed it.
I still doubt that the castration itself had anything to do with the retraction - more likely the vet lubricated it & managed to part fix it at the same time as the operation.
