Licking... Empty Licking...

Post by Dan1 Sat Mar 16 2013, 21:41

Does anyone know why my staff keeps licking everything, she is 10 years old and she never use to do it, she especially loves to lick the leather sofa, however she tends to lick anything and everything at the moment, anyone else had this problem?

I know someone who has a dog of a similar age who does this, with him, its to get attention because he is being ignored

I agree, it's most likely a boredom thing. Logan will do this in the morning sometimes before his walk. Or on rainy days when he doesnt get as much exercise.

Increase her exercise a bit and possibly get some time consuming toys, like kongs/stagbars to occupy her when she's at home

Sorry i didnt really explain that very well, by me saying ignored, i meant when hes not being fussed etc so he will start licking because he knows he will get attention. Just watch she doesnt start on herself

Sounds like it could be a boredom issue, are there plenty of toys to play with ?? Make sure she has plenty of fresh drinking water available.

Have you used anything new on the sofa recently? But she may need more stimulation, stag bars are very good, kongs or try some in door games Smile

Thanks for the replies but i don't think its a exercise or boredom issue as she gets more than enough exercise, she comes running with me twice a day at the forest, once in the morning and once in the evening, plus she is never left alone during the day and has plenty of toys to play with...

I was thinking it could be a vitamin issue and maybe linked to something she is eating...

I don't think vitamins could make this happen. When I said boredom I didn't mean not enough exercise, just maybe she gets herself bored/irritable at times. Logan gets a lot of exercise too but he still gets bored every now and again.

Some dogs have a problem with licking their paws etc which is down to yeast on the skin. I had this with Logan and with some advice from the forum I started giving him apple cider vingegar on his meals and it's nearly totally gone away.
