Rules?
Can you show your dog if she has been spayed? i'm led to believe that in small local shows its ok but once into proper competition spayed dogs are not allowed?

You can only show a spayed bitch under certain very strict rules, and permission is rarely granted.

I just text my uncle who shows poodles . He said he had his bitch spayed due to health reasons and filled in a form 2 years ago that he downloaded from the kennel club and they granted it no problem , he said he didn't state the reason for spaying just the date in took place.

He would have had to state the reason. You have to for any operation - I had to get permission to show Dempsey again after his operation & you have to tell them the reason.

You also have to give the name & address of the vet & they do check up.

Re: Rules?
It doesn't ask for a reason on the form but if they wanted to they could ask your vet the reason .

Re: Rules?
I've not always spayed my bitches but i have no interest in breeding and and our vet tells me that it helps in avoiding all kinds of ailments later in life. Right or wrong? i dont know, I did hear that its best to let your bitch have one litter, i did this many years back, it was a difficult birth and we lost the first 2 pups, then 2 years later she died from tuma's in the womb, was it related? well who knows but i wont let any of my dogs go through that again.

im a firm believer that spaying is each to there own, you sound like you had a terrible time and understand your reasons, im always for this spaying and the snip.
Are you getting another bitch?

It's a very difficult decision to make. Your vet will tell you all the reasons you should get your bitch spayed, but will tell you non of the reasons not to!

The old idea of letting your bitch have a litter before spaying is a false one! Having said that, I would always let a bitch have at least 2 seasons before spaying so that she can mature properly, mentally & physically.

Re: Rules?
Thanks for that Caryll.
A very interesting read. Although there seems to be more evidence against rather than for spaying i am still in the 'for' camp for the time being. Another chat with the vet may put my mind to rest.
I do agree with you 100% that the bitch should reach full maturity before spaying.
Much food for thought.
On the original question about showing, if i were to show it would prob only be in small local events due to work commitments etc, i suppose a quick phone call to any show organiser would give me the answer for each particular event.
Thanks all for your comments.

Re: Rules?
If you're going to show in fun Companion Dog Shows there are very few rules other than "don't let your dog bite the judge, other dogs & other people!" So being spayed won't stop you entering those at all, and they can be a lot of fun, plus they're usually set up to make money for charity.
