Can dogs get conjunctivitis? Empty Can dogs get conjunctivitis?

Post by Fudge Thu Mar 03 2011, 21:44

Evening all,

As the title says can dogs get conjunctivitis? Reason I'm asking is when I got home this evening my partner said whilst out in the garden fudge had been using the back of her paw and rubbing her left eye, when I got home her eye was fine but when I got home after her walk I notice her left eye had shut and she was struggling to open it, a hour or so later after a little sleep her eye was find with abit of 'goo' like sleep at her eye (like conjunctivitis) so I didn't worry and just though she may of had something in her eye which she has since managed to wash out. Then I took her out tonight and have just got home to notice her eye is again, shut and she's struggling to keep it open, whilst the eye is open it looks very blood shocked etc. This is starting to worry me now as I don't want her loosing sight in her left eye! Does anybody have any ideas of what it could be or have they come across this in the past??

Not sure if this in anyway effects things but for the last few days fudge has had dihorrea, but has been well hydrated and eating well.

I don't like anything to do with eyes - I'm an eye-wimp. I have to admit that if bathing with a little cooled boiled water doesn't clear eye problems I'm straight down the vets. I'm not saying that to worry you, it's just me!

Dogs can get conjunctivitis, after all it's just an inflammation of the conjuntiva. However, I would say it's more likely that she's had something in her eye & has scratched it slightly. If it were me with Dempsey I'd pop him to the vet, but as I said, I'm an eye-wimp!

Yep dogs can get conjunctivitis (cg for short please!) I personally would also pop to the vets if its something to do with the eye, especially with the dihorea too.

Cg is very contagious, I caught it from a cat, but also very easily treated.

Thanks for the quick replys. Ye I'm familiar with cg as my 2kids (2 1/2 and 3month) have had it in the past, if fudge does have cg I hope they don't catch it! I've not actually tried bathing the eye yet as I left her to try and blink it out earlier this evening, will give that ago now. It seems like it flares up after a walk or being outside so I'll see how she is after the morning walk and if it happens again Ill get right onto the vets, as I too am a eye-wimp!

When I was building our last house, Bugsy would get it a lot, the vet said it was probably caused by all the dust. Fairly easy to treat IIRC

Just phoned to get fudge in the vets as again after this mornings walk her eye closed shut and she's still got dihorea. Hopefully the vets confirm it's just cg and nothing serious

My god £75 is alot! cost me £30.00, suppose vets can charge anything. Tried cheap drops from the shop first but didnt clear so vets was last resort. Think i only managed to get maximum 10 drops into her eye obviously not at once until she relised she had to sleep with her eyes wide open so i couldnt sneak the drops in. lol

Took fudge to the vets on fri and she has/had a eye infection, was given some eye drops and her eye is now alot better Smile her dihorea is still bad though even after starving her for 24hours as instructed to by vet, so went back this evening and have been given some oxytetracycline for swollen stomach glands I think the vet said? I have to starve fudge for 24hrs again but then give her some boiled rice and chicken and slowly wean her back onto normal food, I previously after starving her I put her back onto her normal feed not aware of anything but have been told this is incorrect. Fudge is still hernormal self running around at 100mph etc so hopefully these tablets will get rid of her stinky diarrhoea Smile

Got fudge weighed properly for the firsttime today, she's 13kg is this about normal weight for a 6month old bitch?

Pleased you found out why the eye was swollen and it shoule be fine in know time. As for the diorea, had to starve mine al the time because she had it badly, over night so was on the carpet. I changed her food eventually and she is know on chicken and rice constantly, its Royal Canin sensitivity control. Just an idea if it doesn't sort itself out. x

Glad the eye's a lot better now, shame the same can't be said for her tummy!

Try her with a little Arrowroot powder made up with some water & a little honey to sweeten it. It'll fill her stomach a little, but won't upset it, and will often 'dry up' the runs.
