My puppy is too friendly...
As the title suggests, I think my puppy is too friendly.
She is now 6 months old. She gets excited every time she meets someone new or if a stranger asks to pet her. She also pees herself.
I was wondering if she's too young to learn how to bark at strangers.
Is she only friendly because we're around? What's going to happen if we're not there & someone comes into our house? Will she act the same or be protective towards our domain?
She just graduated from Puppy School and is now moving on to Basic Obedience classes. (See details below)

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
I'm sorry to say but most Staffies make the worst guard dogs Most Staffs are too friendly with strangers, That's why we need to be extra vigilant with fences and yard security.. If they escape the yard they are likely to follow anyone home

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Same as Kylie, really, they're not good guard dogs. They'll bark if they hear someone break in, probably, since that's a dog instinct regardless of breed. But...besides that you're pretty much on your own . She's still young, she might calm down with age considering she continues meeting people. The more people she meets, the less new and exciting it'll get over time. At last, that's the theory I was given with Loki and his dog excitement

Arrgghh! Really? LOL good one. XD
We have a neighbour with two toy dogs, they bark incessantly whenever they hear her running around our backyard. One time, I sneezed & that triggered barking too. Silly little toy dogs. Hahaha
My puppy just looks at me, as if asking wtf is their problem?! She doesn't bark back! *sigh*

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Small dogs seem really yappy, I can hear this JRT barking literally 24/7. But it depends, really. Some dogs will see everything as a threat and bark at everything, and some are more laidback and will only bark at something 'extreme.' I think Staffs are generally more laidback, so it's good that you don't have a dog that barks every time anything happens at least

Steff is exactly the same Out in the backyard or at the dog park she hears the other dogs barking and she looks at me like "What is that all about?"

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Roxy was exactly the same! She did grow out of the excited peeing eventually (probably around 8 months or so). She has grown to be more weary of people going past, but only if we are weary - she'll pick up on our vibes. Other than that staffys just love people! Actually, Roxy loves dogs too and it's a learning curve for her to understand that not all dogs love her back!

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Hahaha she only barks when I pull out the slipper, threatening to smack her bum. lol
She's got this habit of nipping at my heels or licking it when I'm walking away from her.
When she's being crazy/naughty/hyper, I tend to walk away & that's when she does that. Is that a common behaviour with SBTs?
Is there a way to stop her from doing that or is she just being needy?
She also loves to jump up & pull down clothes hanging from the clothes line. *sigh*
Need help with that one too.

Ohhh, Roxy went through that nippy phase too. A very strong "NO" used to work - eventually - and then standing still and ignoring her for a little bit to let her know play was over if she was nippy. We'd do the same with crazy/hyper phases: fold our arms and turn our backs until she calmed down and realized play needed to be a bit calmer.
I gave up with the clothes line and hang stuff up on a close horse inside now away from them

It's not a SBT thing, it's a puppy thing just tell her 'no' and ignore her. Actually, I think it's better to put her in another room rather than you walk away. I think walking away is like telling her "Fine, you win, I'm leaving," whereas if you put her in another room, that's you stopping the contact, if that makes sense.
Can't help with the last one, Loki things anything hanging in the air is a fun and exciting toy

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Logan is very friendly and excited with guests but can be defensive and protective if he feels he has to.
He hears every noise outside and is a great watch dog. I don't think he'd be a great guard dog however because he would most likely want to person to come in so he could see him.
A few times when we have met groups of rough looking lads etc he has shown signs that he is standing guard over me and keeps a vigillant eye on them.

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
My staffy is friendly with anyone, if someone strokes him outside he gets on his back in the middle of town and they stroke his belly
He's friendly towards anyone that comes inside the house, although as soon as someone knocks on the door he gets up and goes to the door if we don't open the door he'll bark if we do he won't do anything, but I do believe if one day for example we got robbed or someone came to hurt us in our own house he'd attack, to me he is the perfect guard dog, not that I look at him that way but he does it by himself, he knows when someone is friendly or not and I do believe if we wasn't ok with the person coming inside the house he'd pick it up and probably even attack.
Now outside he's different, if he's off the lead and someone walks past he goes straight to them and follows them some people even get scared of him when he starts following them, although he would never hurt them.

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
May I ask why you want your pup to bark at strangers? Without wanting to appear rude (sorry if it comes across that way) but don't Staffords have a bad enough reputation as it is?

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Hi,
It should get slightly better with age:-)
Stella is 21 months old now - she still jumps at visitors, she wants to cuddle all the time. Sometimes we pass strangers on the street and she drops on her back and wants her belly rubbed... We went to vets the other day and when the nurses started fuss her she peed herself.
But her running away to greet people is getting better with training and treats.
But she loves people - she only barks at cats. So definitely not a guard dog - she sees people and starts wagging her tail, she even loves postmen and couriers:-) I love this nature though, so much:-)
We get so many compliments for her friendliness and I am so happy with her. So I would say it is better like this. If there was a burglary (not that my house looks like there is anything inside to steal...) I would be more scared that they would hurt her. A German Shepherd of friends of mine got killed when somebody was stealing their car... They would have happily given the car away if they had been given the choice...

Honeys the same she doesn't bark much either except talking to our cats Lola
apart from that she does the same. She isn't impressed when another dog barks lol she does talk but not the loud barking at a dog or person.

Hi, sorry I'm new to dogs so I just assume that dogs bark. LOL
She's more my BF's dog, he's a dog-lover. I'm a cat-lover. Just learning everything I can about dogs and this cute little SBT of ours.

Re: My puppy is too friendly...
Hahaha sooo I spoke to my partner and he says that I'm a noob. LOL!!!!
He got the SBT because of their temperament, their friendly nature and he knows that they're not guard dogs. They won't turn on the owners & very good with kids.
I just assumed that al dogs were like guard dogs (read: protective). =p
