Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
I have read Ella's brilliant thread on feeding the Prey Model...really useful
I have been to Morrisons butcher this morning and all these items were in the reduced section, most were just pence I have got :
Lamb Ribs
Oxtail
Ox Heart
Chicken Livers
Beef shin
Ox Kidney
and the butcher gave me Lamb spine
I have chopped the kidney and livers up and put them in ice cube trays because I know they make up a smaller part of the diet. I have portioned and froze all the other items.
Can someone in the know please tell me if all these items are ok to give to dogs .....and if they will be suitable for an 8 wk old pup.
She is great on the chicken drumsticks and beef cut up...no upset tummies at all so far and she is really enjoying it
Another question...my hubby goes fishing in the summer...he catches mostly Cod, Mackerel and Pollock ...are these also ok to give..what about fish bones ?
Sorry for all the questions

I'm no expert on this but I'd avoid fish bones, they can be very pointy!

Thanks for that Warren , great help.
I am really enjoying learning all about it ...am going to order a book to help
My hubby said that '' if we catch any cod Sarah, we are eating it not the dog''
We don't catch it often enough to be honest

to be fair the smaller stuff he will catch which he would normally throw back as not good /big enough to eat are the ones your wanting to feed as smaller bones ex and no need to gut and head and tail just give the whole lot

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
All the stuff on there is fine, BUT. At 8 weeks I would stick with one protein source (chicken usually) for about a fortnight & then introduce another so that her delicate little tum doesn't throw it all back! Freeze everything else until you're ready to move on.
The lamb spines are great because they're softer and easier to digest.

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
We give Brutus Omega 3 that comes in a pump pack. Just squirt it on his food once per day. We also give him sardines in olive oil twice a week to help out too. Loves them.
Ella and Caryll are the gurus on the subject and are very, very helpful.

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
Everything there is great to feed but like caryll said do everything gradually introducing one new protein a time.
And yea fish bones are fine to give
The only oil I give is salmon oil which you need to give vit e with just the normal human ones are fine for that

Thanks Ella !! Hope I can get into it as much as you do
Can you tell me... Does it matter if the only offal I give us kidneys and liver ( from different animals ) it's just I am not sure I will find it easy to get hold of other types .
Also is tripe something you can give regular or is it just an occasional things ?
Thanks
Sarah

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
If you order from an online supplier you'll be able to get a bigger variety! DAF has a really good variety, liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas etc
My 2 get green tripe nearly every day

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
It's exciting filling it up with stuff though ! The kids are saying the dog is going to be better fed than them lol
Another question !!
My vet is totally against the raw approach and has warned me that it doesn't contain enough calcium ... Is there any truth in this and if so how do people add calcium into their dogs diet ... Perhaps egg shells ?
I got 4 little sardines today for 55p in the reduced section at the supermarket , I let her have a little taste before I froze them but she turned her nose up ... The breeder said the litter didn't like tuna and she hates the fish for dogs puppy food ... Perhaps I have a puppy that doesn't like fish because she goes crazy for the chicken drumsticks :/

Most vets are against it, so I'd avoid saying anything to them about it! Does a wolf need added calcium? You can always add eggs with shell and you can dry the shell and powder it down and add to food aswell!
Some dogs don't like raw fish. Sierra will eat raw sprats/sea bass etc but Bailey will point blank refuse it! You can always give her tins of sardines/sprats in oil or tomato sauce! Tuna should be avoided as its high in mercury.

Re: Can someone please check these RAW foods out for me
yer you don't need to add calcium as long as they get enough bones.
It's more important to balance the calcium: phosphorus ratio which is done by feeding a variety of different bones and meat
