Raw prey model for puppy
Can anyone help with this :
our pup ( 8 wk tomorrow ) has been weaned on fish 4 dogs but breeder has also given , green tripe, minced beef, chicken , eggs.... so pup has quite a strong little tummy .
Pup hates the fish 4 dogs and yesterday I gave her a chicken drumstick raw and she devoured it. So I am thinking of taking the plunge and just doing the raw thing . Can anyone tell me if this would be a good diet for the day?
7am a chicken drumstick ( should this be a wing or thigh?)
11am Scrambled egg with goats milk plus shell
3pm minced beef or cut up pieces of raw meat maybe green tripe?
7pm chicken drumstick
Please tell me if this is wrong because I would hate to stump her growth
I thought I would then introuduce liver and kidneys etc in small amounts once a bit older?
Is that enough bone ?

It may be enough bone or it may not. Every dog is different. Some dogs need 5% bone, others anything up to 20%! Just be on poo watch, if its soft up the bone content, if its white/crumbly reduce the bone and include more meat! Remember they need less raw than they would kibble, I used the top end of the standard of 15kg for a bitch and worked out her daily meal size from that but I think she gets alot more than she should (I don't measure anything, I go by body condition!)

Re: Raw prey model for puppy
Thanks for that Stuart , I will have a look through the past posts.
I sm trying to find out what other bone she can eat ( not just chew) at this puppy stage , or do I just stick to the chicken for now ?
The butcher at morrisons said he would save me some ribs and they sell liver, kidneys, etc. I have a staff discount card from my mum
so get 10% off so it might not be that expensive .
I can't find tripe anywhere other than that bleached stuff so have bought a frozen block of minced tripe and thawed it enough to cut into little blocks .

Re: Raw prey model for puppy
My girl is 24 weeks or so now and can eat most bone that my boy eats! Usually pork/lamb ribs, chicken/duck wings, ox tail etc!
I think at 8 weeks she was only eating wings and drumsticks. But I was giving her ribs etc so she was getting used to them. Just watch she doesn't try to swallow it whole though!
You'll only really get green tripe from an online supplier. I get mine from DAF (Durham Animal Feeds).

Thanks again Stu, do you get your ribs from DAF and do they have a lot of meat on them?

Ask the butcher if he'll save you some lamb's spine, but not till you're certain that she's settled with the chicken. It's best to let them get used to one protein source at a time.

I want to do the raw but currently dnt have the space to house this
But i would say go for it, give it a go and see how she and her body take to it!

Re: Raw prey model for puppy
Thank you Caryll
I will ask if they have that
my vet has told me this whole raw thing is a bad idea as it lacks calcium and a bond could damage the bowel?
I know vets are not nutritional experts and I do feel confident that it will be great for Holly... It just made me worry a bit ?
I am enjoying seeing her enjoy her food ... If it goes well I going to get another freezer and put it in the garage
if we lived closer you could share it lol
