He's a beaut. Well done on getting him off lead. I'm not brave enough for that anymore.

If you have somewhere safe, eg a long way from roads etc. , I'd give it a try. Being a puppy, and out in the big bad world, he's unlikely to want to leave you. Do recalls frequently and give lots of praise/treats. Same when he returns to you of his own accord.
I've had dogs all my adult life, although Bacchus is my first staffy, and have found that dogs who are seldom let off the lead find it a novelty and are reluctant to come back.
Bacchus has been allowed to run free ( we have a huge meadow area on the edge of the village well away from roads ) from day one and never strays far from me, and seldom wants to be out of sight. When we are approaching the village I call him over and he is happy to sit and have his lead put back on.
He is only 8 mths so I realize i will have to watch out for signs of dog aggression as he gets older, but he is very well socialised so I hope this won't be an issue.
As I said this is my first staffy so if I'm being naive I welcome any advice from the experienced guys.

Re: Busters 1st time off the lead
Good stuff!
I agree with Reuben fully. Tommy is coming up to 5 months now and he's been off the lead since the first day out with me. I took him on the park at a time I knew would be very quiet and just let him off. The fear of being left alone is enough for them to follow, so it was loads of prize with the odd little nibble of cheese and hey presto. He's obviously a lot more confident now but because of the early training he still doesn't move more than 10 yards from me...unless he's playing with his pals!
I spoke with a woman the other week who was walking another staffy (16 weeks old ) and she was terrified of letting him off on case he ran away. I believe the earlier you do it, the more comfortable both owner and dog will be.
Enjoy your walks.

Re: Busters 1st time off the lead
I must admit I was so nervous letting him off thinking he would run away etc but he doesn't like to be too far away from me or Jon.
He was really good today didnt run off to another dog did go to chase a jogger told him no and to sit and he did.
But treats do work as well to get them to come to you as well.
We going puppy school next week starting a 6 week course so fingers crossed we learn loads more so can keep up the good work with Buster.

Re: Busters 1st time off the lead
I like letting them off lead as soon as possible! I think Bailey was 11-12 weeks when he was off the lead the first time! Terrified me at the time haha
Sierra was about the same age aswell, but wasn't as bothered with her as she just followed Bails everywhere! Call him back and she came back aswell

Re: Busters 1st time off the lead
Like Stu , Tommy was no bother as he just followed Tilly everywhere and if you start as a pup they aren't so fast if they do decide to make a break for it
