First Time Walking on lead
It's the big day on Friday, Alfie's allowed out for the first time problem is i tried him in the garden today, he's used to a collar but when i put the lead on him he went mental, anybody got any ideas to help him get used to the lead. I wondered if having someone walking ahead offering treats might be the solution.
Help!

Re: First Time Walking on lead
Try just attaching the lead and let him trail it around behind him without you holding it to begin with.

Re: First Time Walking on lead
My pup hated the lead to begin with, soon as he saw it he would hide !
I put it on him and he would trail it around and chew it, used an old lead for this very reason lol.
He kinda got used to it and has been fine from day 1 when walking. His tail constantly wags, it's quite funny tbh.
Main thing, be calm when u take him out, my pup tried sitting there not wanting to move so I tugged and carried on walking, he followed and realised that actually it's gr8 to walk !

Debo was like that,he was fine with his collar but when put his lead on ,he just rolled on his back,so I just draged him around the room with a treat in my hand - nothing worked. But as soon as we were allowed to take him outside he was so distracted by everything ,he just forgot about the lead

Re: First Time Walking on lead
Let him walk around the house wih the lead simply trailing. Then, with plenty of treats in your hand, pick up the lead and entice him forward with a treat. If he moves forward reward him with the treat and lots of praise. Don't pull on the lead at all. Take little steps a a time and have lots of patience. Work towards being on the lead being a very pleasant experience. Enjoy

If he just chews the lead when you put it on him then instead of just clipping it on and leaving him, play a game with him like tug or get him to chase something. That way he won't be interested in it and will build up a positive association with the lead

I've also heard that some will use shoelaces tied to the collar, that way u can add another, then another till its a reasonable length so pup gets used to it more gradually. Didnt do this myself thi.

Good advice here and your idea of using treats as an encouragement is also a good one. Once he gets outside he will be fine. Just don't force things and let him discover the world at his own pace.

Re: First Time Walking on lead
I have a metal lead, so I put it on Loki and let him chew it because I knew he was just getting used to it. I also gave him a treat every time he stopped. I don't know whether that made a difference or he stopped just cos he got used to it, but he doesn't bite it now.
