Sore eye
Following on from Zeus's diagnosis that he has a hystiocytoma tumour on his right paw, hes been on anti biotics/anti inflammatories and has had a cone on for almost 3 weeks now. It has got much better, almost gone, just with the scab left.
Anyways, today we had to change his cone as he damaged the last one, we thought we'd give him a few hours without the cone just so he can feel free for a bit. In this time, he kept doing odd things with/to his eyes. He kept rolling around on the floor, face first, rubbing his eye off the carpet. He was also scratching it like mad, both of them at one point. It got to a point where hes made the skin right under his eye bleed, and it looks like hes got a black eye now.
What can be causing this??
I did mention in a previous post somewhere that he had a red line in his eye, leading from the back right to the pupil, (was told it might be a burst blood vessel?), what should I be looking out for and what should i do?
The new cones back on him now so he can't scratch anymore, I also gave him a piriton incase it may be some sort of allergy (which I doubt because his diet has remained the same, could it be the meds that are causing a reaction?)

Re: Sore eye
It could be the meds, or he may have picked up an infection or a habit, keep the cone on and you could try bathing in salt water. If it continues to a worrying extent then vets again, you can never be too careful with eyes Xx

Re: Sore eye
I'd mention it to the vet, but in the meantime try holding a used, cold damp tea bag against the eyes (one at a time of course) for a couple of minutes - it's very soothing!

Re: Sore eye
It sounds like he is trying to keep himself clean and has not been able to whilst the cone was in place. Just give his face a wipe over with a damp face cloth a couple of times a day. He may have got something in his eye and was not able to clean it himself.

Re: Sore eye
That's exactly what I thought, when we took the cone off, he was literally scratching and licking himself all over, something he hasnt been able to do for a while now.
Will definatly try the damp tea bag/salt water method and see how he goes, gotta go to the vets next week to check his tumour so will mention something then.
Thanks all!

Re: Sore eye
How do you guys get your dogs to put salt water or a damp tea bag on them? I've been trying this with Zeus as you suggested but its almost impossible to do it, he either runs a mile or just jumps up and doesn't let you get anywhere near him. And I don't want to just put some salt water on a tissue and put it on just incase I get some in his eye..
The outside of his eyes are looking pretty bad at the moment, he scratched them alot when we weren't looking and now it looks worse because theyve turned into a scab and must be irritating him. I've given him a piriton just incase its some sort of allergy. Any other ideas?

Re: Sore eye
Wait until he's tired, give him a cuddle to settle him, and gently put the damp tea bag over one eye, keep stroking him in his favourite place. Try & keep it there for at least a minute, but don't put too much pressure on it.
Just do one at a time.

We're booked in the vets for Tuesday evening to look at his hystiocytoma, so will definitely ask then.

Hi Caryll, thanks, will try this, we've already managed to put salt water on it how you've just mentioned, it looks like its getting better, hopefully in a few days it'll be all good, just hoping he doesnt keep scratching it after.

Re: Sore eye
My girl had a histiocytima - they resolve on their own, she didn't need meds- it was on her side near her shoulder so she couldn't reach it.
Antibiotics kill all the good bacteria (as well as the bad) try her with some natural goats milk yogurt.
Also try adding oils to her diet to help moisturise her skin.

Hi Jackie, I did read that they resolved themselves but the problem was that Zeus had it on his back right paw, and he kept going at it, making it bleed etc, then it got infected so it got worse. Which is why he's had his cone on for almost a month now. There was alot of inflammation ontop of the hystiocytoma so the vets put him on anti inflammatories and anti biotics to get rid of this, the majority of its gone but just scabby now.
I've never heard of giving goats milk yoghurt, what does this do?

Re: Sore eye
Goats milk yogurt is a probiotic yogurt full of the friendly gut bacteria. Pop him on some other immune system boosting supplements too IMO such as Garlic n Fenugreek tablets daily, vitamin e and starflower oil as well as the omega oils too.
Lot of things u need to adjust what goes in - to effect what is out x

I already give him salmon oil for omega 3 but the rest of the suggestions are brilliant, will definitely look into this and get him on some. Thanks!
