Over-affectionate staff? Empty Over-affectionate staff?

Post by jitjit Sat Sep 18 2010, 11:33

Hi guys/girls,

New to the website, have an 18 month old bitch who won't stop licking/nipping at your ears when stroking or showing her affection. Just wondered if anyone has an idea why she might be doing this is it normal?. If i have her on my lap she is always trying to get in my face and constantly lick, the nibbling of the ears isn't so frequent.

Just wondered if anyone can help as she is our first staff so still learning her behavioural traits!!

Many thanks in advance!!!

I think this is just normal behaviour. They are affectionate dogs and do like to lick and nip ears. Our dog is 2 and a half and does this still. When you feel the dog is being overpowering just gently hold her muzzle and turn her head away with a sharp command no and in time she will get to know she is bugging you

I think it's just a Staffyism, when we come back from a walk out with Rocky he will jump on the bed and lick my hubbys face and head, very strange dog Laughing

Welcome to staffy ownership! If it's bothering you, you can keep in control by standing up and going to another room closing the door behind you. Pushing her muzzle away might be considered playful by some dogs.

I love my staffy kisses, as long as I haven't seen where there tongues have been prior to this. Tommy used to nip now he just licks you violently , I exhange tongues with Tilly on a regular basis and she is much more gentle about it

If its something you don't like then when she does it say no and stand up. If you don't mind it, then your dog will definitely continue to do it! Staffies love to kiss Big Grin

Louby is VERY affectionate. She does nip/bite at the same time as licking, so it is a big no no. I just stand up and say no. she soon gets the message, for about 2 mins anyway!!!
