Is one meal a day enough?
Hi everyone. My staffie cross Chase has always been a good eater and is a very healthy happy and energetic dog. He would always have one meal in the morning after his toilet visit to the garden and one in the evening and would wolf both down. However, for the past seven days he has been turning his nose up at his breakfast, not touching it. I leave it down for an hour or so but then have to throw it away as I cant risk him eating just before taking him for his midday walk.
Because of this, I have moved his evening meal an hour earlier and he licks the bowl clean. Will he be ok on one meal a day? Or should I give him a small meal after our walk and then another in the evening?
I'm very confused by this.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
I feed twice a day because Dempsey had bloat when he was younger & I daren't risk overloading his stomach with just one meal a day.
However, a lot of people feed just one meal a day from about 9 months - to a year old with no problems.

Rocky has two meals a day too. He now has his lunch around 1pm and dinner around 5pm. He is walked at around 9am and 3pm to avoid feeding near walkies times thus avoiding bloat.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
I personally prefer 2 meals a day just so they don't have to go quite so long em-between.
But I know lots of people who only feed their dog once a day with no problems.
With regard to not eating as long as he is healthy in other all other ways and seems him normal self, don't worry about it.
We went through a stage of Molly being fussy eating, so we tried changing food, we tried encouraging her to eat, tried adding salmon mouse and salmon oil to her dry food ect ect. None of it worked long term.
In the end what worked was putting the normal food down if she dint want it fine, ignore that leave it down for 15 mins if its not gone pick it up and wait till next meal time.

Moo skips breakfast herself! So she gets a tiny amount as I usually have to bin it, and larger tea

I feed once a day. But she gets her meat on its own and then her kibble sits down so she can. Pick at it through the day. Works for her.

Ours basically hover between 2 or 1 depending on how their mood is , always 2 hours min before or after walks but neither of them are wolfers with their proper food anyway

Thank you everyone for your replies
I will try diffferent things I think. I am now feeding him two hours after we come back from our midday walk and then I feed him just before bedtime. Its worked the past two days/nights without incident, but I must admit I wish he would go back to breakfast and tea as him going without food for the greater majority of the morning still worries me.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
He might actually be telling you he only wants one meal a day? Sometimes when a pup should be moved down a meal, they'll just pick at one or completely ignore it!
Bailey used to miss breakfast, so I eventually just changed him to 1 a day and he's fine!

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
I feed Pixee twice a day, sometimes she oftens skips her breakfast and will eat later in the day. At the moment I can leave her food down while the weather is not hot, but once hot, I would have to remove her breakfast as it would go off. Its a fate she goes through. Kind of like for weeks I want both meals, then other times she just happy enough with her tea, but I do up the portions then. Each to their own.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
I feed my dogs one meal a day in the evening after their walk. Under the age of 1 they get 2 or 3 meals a day and over the age of 11/12 they go back up to two meals.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
When we first got Densil a year ago he was fed twice a day, morning and evening (burgess supadog). He was 3 yrs old then and used to eat it all up no problems. The last couple of months he hasn't been bothering about his breakfast so I started cutting down on the portion in the morning and then giving more in the evening. He still eats his evening meal all up, but the morning one he doesn't bother about or leaves it until lunchtime, so I'm going to try putting some down at lunch and the rest in the evening. We always used to give him a few biscuits at lunchtime, so may change this to breakfast and see how it goes. He is supposed to have 2 cups a day of the supadog and he just isn't eating all that amount in the evening, but he hasn't lost any weight so must be ok.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
Millie and Bella get fed twice a day and Millie will go through phases where she doesn't want her bbreakfast. As long as she is still eating at teatime I don't worry about it. Bella would just eat all day every day if she had the chance lol.

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
My dog used to be fed 2 times a day too, she used to slowly eat both of them and i noticed she started putting on weight! She eventually stopped eating her breakfast and only slowly ate her dinner which i was super confused about as i worked with my dog in the kennels before i rescued her and she could eat for England in a matter of seconds! anyway I moved her down to one meal a day at around 6 every day after her 2 hour walk; when she's back after settling a while, she licks the bowl clean. When i leave the house around 8 every morning i give her a few biscuits and chews just to tide her over! The vets said she had to lose a bit of weight and we went back for her booster and the vet said she's in great shape! It seems to have done the trick, however, she's a lot more food obsessed now so i'm thinking i should maybe feed a bit more? But i'm not sure!! Any help would be great

Re: Is one meal a day enough?
I prefer two small meals for Logan. One early in the morning and another about an hour after his big evening walk. He's a picky eater and not too food driven so small meals seem less daunting to him.
