staffy pup biting
my 9 week old staffy pup has a biting problem,
he goes from being in a chilled mood, to the thinking i want to play & then he starts biting at my feet or my hands, & occasionaly barks & growls when he gets in these moods.
he is pretty stays out side & i will go out side to play with him, as soon as he comes inside he wont relax & jumps around then starts his biting.
does anyone no how to stop him biting & making him think i dont want to play lol
do staffys grown out of there biting wanting to play all the time phase lol & at rougly what age.
ide love to bring him inside but he just wont calm down

Re: staffy pup biting
The behaviour is completly normal and part of the maturing and learning process. Here is a link that will help.

Yeah, it's completely normal, that's how they play. They grow out of it if you're consistent with your training, but there's no specific time frame. Loki still bites when he's really excited, and he's 9 months old, but it's very rare now. Whereas some puppies take just a few weeks to stop. The link jstaff posted is good

Re: staffy pup biting
It's common with puppies. They're playing and testing their "bite". What we were told to do was yelp (like another puppy would). Skye would pull away straight away at the sound. A high pitched cry/yelp makes the puppy realise theyre biting too hard. It's how they learn when they're still with their siblings/mother. As puppies play together they bite, nip and 'mouth' each other and would obviously yelp if it's too hard. It only took a few days of doing this with Skye and she'd calmed down and realised how hard "mouth", and then gradually stopped altogether. Goodluck xx

Re: staffy pup biting
Please remember that everything your pup does is a 'behaviour' and one that they would naturally use with their siblings/parents and is neither right nor wrong. What we have to do is teach the pup what humans expect from them, and which 'behaviours' are acceptable to us.
If your pup nips you either give a high yelp as suggested above or give a firm "No!", and then turn away & refuse to interact until they are calm again. Don't even make eye contact. Staffs naturally like to get loads of attention & will soon realise that biting gets them no attention and not biting means the game continues!

It's normal puppy behaviour, try using the word NO and turn your back and ignore him when he does it. Reward him for good behaviour when he doesn't nip. He will soon get the idea of what is not acceptable and what is.

Re: staffy pup biting
i agree with everyone really and at 9 weeks old i woouldnt expect anything less as its not long since they have left there siblings so he will see this as normal behavior. I agree with the time out process. you now have to teach him how to play with his toys aswell

Re: staffy pup biting
Yes, Ive been there too and those little bites and nips really hurt dont they
I found it took a long time for Harry to stop, and the squealing method only made him do it more, almost as though he thought 'oh you liked that, I will do it again' - think he was a sadistic puppy

Re: staffy pup biting
you just have to be really consistant. i was lucky, my staff learnt with in a day biting was not on from using the same methods the others have shared. you'll get there
Re: staffy pup biting
I had the same reaction from Katy as lizzie said, i keep a spray bottle of water to hand but usually only have to show it to her for her to calm down.
