Vegetables for my Staffy? Empty Vegetables for my Staffy?

Post by Fryfogle29 Mon Feb 11 2013, 04:31

Alright, I've been reading about feeding your dogs Natural fresh meats vrs feeding them kibble. While I am all for that, my Husband continues to fight me on this, so I believe I'm losing out to kibble on this one.

I'm doing my best to plan ahead for my beloved near future pup. I've been planning our garden even though I can't start planting until March. I wanted to know if there were Good Vegetables and or bad vegetables to feed a Staffy?

I'd like to know so that I can still plant what isn't good for him (for the rest of us to have) and if there are better ones that will benefit him/her then I can plan to plant extra so I can be sure to have them on hand for my pup.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

they cant digest raw veg well and overcooked veg doesnt do much vitamin wise. If you lightly steam carrots broccoli coli-flower etc its much better. Kibble is ok if its a good quality one we mix with veg sardines pilchards etc Smile

Logan loves his veg! Even though they apparently can't get much nutrients from them, he loves them, they bulk his meal up without adding a lot of calories and he is a lot more satisfied with a full tummy!

Sardines are his favourite food by far, but he only gets them once a week max.

Okay. What are pilchards.. Goodness I feel silly asking some of these questions lol.

as a mom of a 5 year old and 9 year old, we have made a lot of changes in our household. We don't use ANY chemicals at all in our house anymore, I clean with all natural ingredients and we've started to eat Primal. ( Not so hardcore as the Paelo diet though lol I can not give up my cheeeese) lol So I was figuring that Holistic would be the best way to go for our new family member as well. but there are just things out there that I don't know about lol

I'm getting confused also, because my whole life I thought it was bad to feed them meat at all and that they could absolutely not have any bones. So I guess my next question is, if I'm cooking a Turkey or Chicken can I feed the dog the Gizzards and such ? or would I have to clean it first ? de-bone the neck first or what. How does that work. ( Cause if hubby has his way he's eating kibble only period. but I'm not down with that.)

Pilchards are just an oily fish like a sardine but smaller.

I feed Logan meat aswell as kibble, but I cook the meat (just by boiling). I feed mince, liver, kidneys etc.

If you are planning to feed raw bare in mind it should be fed separately than cooked food/kibble as it takes different amounts of time to digest.

Alright, will do Smile Currently I'm just browsing the internet for a good quality puppy chow. I believe our Wal-Mart here has something ( I think it's called bill jack?) in the Frozen food Isle I wonder if that's healthier for dogs than just icky whatever kibble.

A good quality kibble goes a long, long way. I'm not certain what brands you would get over there but if you search for something with high meat content (meat labelled as the first ingredient), low amounts of grains and as few additives as possible you won't really need much else. I only add meat to my food with veg because Logan is a very picky eater. I feed a brand called James Wellbeloved, it's hypoallergenic and very good.

A lot of our members feed raw and it is also a good way to feed. It doesn't suit me though.

I just found this online, if only I could find a price and how big the bag is, I suppose I'd probably buy it. I shop online a lot, so I suspect I could probably get any type of food I wanted (provided it were available to be shipped here to the states if it's out of country.)

It certainly isn't bad to feed your dog raw meat as long as it's done properly. When I get a spare minute later on today I'll post a couple of links for you to look at on how to feed a raw diet.

If you're cooking meat then don't give any of the bones to your dog. Cooked bones can & do splinter very easily & can do great harm to your dog. Raw bones are fine, but don't give the big, weight bearing (marrow) bones as a meal.

Vegetables aren't necessary to dogs on either a raw or kibble diet. If you do want to give them (a lot of dogs like the taste) then you can give carrots, cabbage, cauliflower etc raw, although unless they're pulped your dog will get very little nutrients from them.

Alright, thanks Smile It makes perfect sense to me now as an Adult and one who is doing the "homework" to really know what is best for my pet, that it's OK to feed them meat. I mean, What? we eat it!? and I always knew dogs were Carnivores I just never really sat and thought about it until now. I will more than likely only feed him/her bits and pieces of meat here and there because the hubby is bent on feeding kibble.

Kibble's fine as long as it's a good quality one.

Raw meat & bones diets aren't for every dog or every owner! Wink

I feed raw and have never or will never feed veg, there is no need and dogs get so little from them HOWEVER if your dogs enjoys them then there is no harm in adding a little bit in with there food Smile
