How to control excitement and jumping up
Hi our Bruiser is 4 months now and we are having probs with how excited hes getting when someone new comes into the house or when i come home from work.
we have noticed over the fast month the excitement and jumping is getting worse, or maybe coz hes getting bigger we are noticing more?!
We are tryin the technique and also getting others who to come to our house usuing the technique of ignoring him completely and avoiding eye contact until he stops jumping up and he becomes calm, but usually once someone then strokes him for the first time when he has become calm he goes beserk jumping up and getting over excited once again. i no there is no malice in it, he is just so excited, but obviously i dont want him doing this when hes adult size!
My partner tends to be home most the day with Bruiser, i work long hours..when i get home he goes beserk, probably more so than when friends/relatives visit. he jumps up and me, barks and sometimes tries to nip at my shoes if i refuse to acknowledge him, which i dont as i wont til he calms down..........again once he is calm i show him affection and it starts all over again!
is there other things i can try? or is it a case of he will grow out of it before he becomes an adult?!

Re: How to control excitement and jumping up
It sounds like your doing the right things. The main message to get across is that if they are not calm, they don't get attension.
He is still young and will get more excited easier than an adult dog. I think if you continue to do what your doing he will soon get the message. I only give blue attension once he is sat as soon as he breaks the sit I stop the affection.
Keep up the good work.

Persistence! You're doing all the right things, but sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop!
Maybe you could try a sharp "No!" at the same time you turn away & ignore him?

Re: How to control excitement and jumping up
Thought i would repost here as Bruisers jumping up when people come round has become worse, a friends came over with her 7 year old son yesterday and bruiser almost knocked him over, i had to crate him because he was scaring the child.
It seems even though we are telling him no he enjoys any attention even if its negative, does that even make sense? lol
will he really gorw out of this? or should i take him training classes? he is 6 months now

Re: How to control excitement and jumping up
billy used to jump up at people in the house, but we told guests to ignore him and say a firm no, he does not do that anymore, infact when the dor bell goes he just carries on lying in his bed .
But we still have a problem outside especially when he is off lead in the woods, luckily other people there have dogs and understand he is still a puppy and learning, he just gets so excited when he sees people.

Makes lots of sense - these dogs love attention of any kind. If negative is the best they can get, they take it. My pug puppy actually walked over and deliberately bit my ex boyfriend to get attention. Stopped right away once we ignored it instead of correcting him.raverhayley wrote:

Remember you have to start ignoring him again as soon as he starts going a little excited. You might want to put a collar and leash on him when you get company so that you can lead him away without talking to him or touching him if he gets out of hand. ANY attention can be enough. Also - this behaviour have, in some or other way, been reinforced for quite some time so you have to be super consequent and patient with him. Also learning to always sit and give you attention before meeting someone (outside on leash is a good starting point) is good.
I also firmly believe all dogs deserve to go to some classes - basic obedience or special meet-and-greet classes should be helpful. Best of luck!

Definitely go to training classes - if you get a good one, it's worth its weight in gold. You get to train and socialise your dog all in one!
