A suitable treat
Good Day All,
As i browse pet shop, i often see these large smoked bones. I was wondering if they would be a suitable treat for marley @ 14 weeks. she loves her bully sticks and nylabones, i don't give them to her in her crate as she gets them through the bars and goes ballistic. these larger bones would definitely not fit through the bars.
Thanks

Re: A suitable treat
I got one of the cooked bones for Logan once...it was a bad idea. It splintered and coulda cut him or choked him if he had been left on his own. He also vomitted up the meat/fat he got off it.

Do you use a kong? Logan loves his and if frozen will last ages.

Re: A suitable treat
No way. I gave Loki one once and he choked on the meat/fat because it was so easy to pull off huge chunks of it, he was running around screaming for a good few minutes . I can't really advise anything else though because I just give Loki a filled bone (stuffed with anything tasty) or his StagBar and he tends to keep them away from the bars so they don't fall out.

I got the kong biscuits free when I bought it but Logan didn't really care much about them. He is absolutely mad for vegetables so I boil then mash up carrots/broccoli and then put a few bits of ham in. Then freeze it until it's totally solid. It doesn't smell at all because it's just veg and as it melts he eats it and it doesn't get a chance to get on the floor lol!
A lot of people use peanut butter too, I haven't used it myself but it would also be a good idea.

we have used peanut butter as a primer for it to get her going, hope she dont get the runs lol. but i will give that a try.
Re: A suitable treat
Awesome! I always mean to try peanut butter in mine but Logan is mad for broccoli so it's a no brainer for me. I wouldn't do the peanut butter everytime because it's rich stuff and fairly high in calories. You should try the veg too, a big bag of frozen veg goes a long way in my house lol.

Re: A suitable treat
i found this site http://www.caninemind.co.uk/kong.html and i will be giving these a try. im guessing if i give her one of these i would adjust her feeding portions?
Re: A suitable treat
I put a couple of treats in or some meaty scraps, then his dry food, then seal it with peanut butter. In the summer I used to add yoghurt too and then put it in the freezer overnight so it was frozen for him the next day

Re: A suitable treat
I stick Marmite inside the Kong and stuff it full of all kinds of little treats; liver, cubes of mashed frozen veg, pieces of chicken. The Marmite sticks it quite well into the Kong so he needs to use a bit of work to get to the goodies. And it's not as high in calories as peanut butter

Re: A suitable treat
I cook a sweet potato in the microwave then peel and mash it with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter mixed through. I then stuff the kong with this, sometimes with part of his kibble ration mixed in. The sweet potato stops any treats falling out but he has learned to bounce it to get the last bits out which makes him work for it.
I also rub a little peanut butter in to the ends of his stag bar just to get him going.

i think i mite start with this concoction :-)
Re: A suitable treat
I buy chicken necks from the shops with some veg- carrot, beans etc and make a broth or stock. Freeze it into little containers or her Kong and she can not get enough of it especially as its really hot here at the moment.

Reuben, i did a carrot mash and peanutbutter mix, plugged the hole with a nice piece of banana. she quiet enjoyed it :-). it lasted her about an hour. Would you freeze a mix like that inside of a kong? so it lasts longer for her.
Re: A suitable treat
yes freeze the kong makes it last alot longer
and just on the bones, the ones sold in pet shops for dogs, the roasted or smoked bones should never be fed they are cooked bones and splinter terribly and should be banned for the amount of dogs that have died or been seriously poorly when eaten one

Thanks ella. :-) i definatley havnt given them a 2nd look. she preferes to chew on stuff thats tasty and edible so she murders a bully stick. what about those smoked knuckles or joints? same splinter problem? i have seen what lookk like pig hooves and a braided lamb chew stick.

Not only will it last longer, it will be very welcome in the heat plus soothing on the gums when she is teething.
P.S.
How about some pics of her. She must be getting bigger now.

thx matt, bit of a weird question, judging by her head, would she have a shorter snout like logan and bacchus?
Re: A suitable treat
She does remind me of Logan when he was a baby. They change a lot in the first few months so expect a big change. Everything is looking really good for you at this stage though!

Thanks for sharing, she's gorgeous. My wife wanted a blue but they are problematic here due to unscrupulous breeders breeding badly and charging a fortune for mediochre dogs. Hope she enjoys her kong treats.

nope they are still cooked regardless of what the actual bone is. Raw bones from the supermarket or butcher are totally fine to give and normally cheaper anyway.
Hooves are fine to give, but can be a bit rich for some dogs, and they stink when they get wet when they have chewed them
