Raw Meat and Bones diet
Another question guys.
I was wondering how many, if any,of you guys have your puppy on a raw meat and bones diet? I have Tommy on chicken thighs, wings and necks and he loves them. I'm starting to expand it onto meat and bones other than chicken and was wondering if anybody has any advise as to which bones he could manage easily at 16 weeks.
Cheers folks

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
I have only fed an adult dog RAW but Ella will advise you. It will probably be better if you introduce one meat at a time until you know he is fine with it.

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
thought my ears were burning
If you are wanting to do a raw diet full time then do plenty of reading as it's not as simple as putting kibble in a bowl!
Have a look at the guide at the top of the page here:
www.preymodelraw.com
Essentially the diet is 80% meat, 10% edible bones and 10% offal but these don't need to be stuck to religiously just loosely!
I see you have started with chicken which is great!
You start with one protein at a time usually chicken, and then add ONE new meat in every week or 2 once you have consistent good stools.
Normal order is
chicken, turkey, lamb, fish, pork, beef and then offal!
So yes forget giving offal i.e liver, kidney for at least 2 months if not longer and introduce everything else first.
At 16 weeks if he's used to eating chicken, and turkey is sometimes hard to come by, try some lamb bones like ribs or spine and similiar things

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
Ella,
thanks, I did quite a lot of research prior to starting with the raw diet but it is always good to hear of somebody doing it firsthand. In your opinion do you think it is becoming more popular or do people still have a lot of reservations? Tommy has been on chicken since he was about 9 weeks old. His stools in the main have been consistent; occassionally he might have the odd loose one but I put this down to him constantly sniffing around and eating anything which he finds on the floor!!!
I use homemade desicated liver for treats for him; although not every day. He usually gets these 3 times a week but they are very tiny pieces. I also just started with raw mince too. He has sardines twice a week too.
I will give him a go with lambs ribs tomorrow. He might be getting fed up with chicken!
Thank you again

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
no worries thought i'd just go through it all haha
I've always fed raw but alot of people do not like it and think it is dangerous etc etc and alot of vets will tell you, you are kiling your pup
Ahh well if he's good on the chicken start adding new foods in slowly
morrissons if you have one near you can be really good for bones and stuff, i get alot of lamb bone from there for about 40p

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
And some vets say that you're killing your puppy by feeding raw meat and bones? Why would they say that, what's their rationale behind such a sweeping statement?
Tommy seems as content and healthy puppy as I've ever seen. He is calm, attentive, full of energy and brilliant with both people and other do. I always tell them that i believe it is down to his diet and exercise. When I tell them he is on a raw diet people look at me like I'm an alien. "you can't feed dogs with chicken bones, they splinter and rupture their stomachs or get stuck in their throats" is the usual response.
We have a Morrisons about a mile away, i'll be in there tomorrow

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
My 18 week old pup has been raw fed since 7.5 weeks and can eat nearly anything my older boy does! She eats chicken wings/quarters/carcasses, lamb spine/ribs, pork ribs, raw fish, tripe on a regular basis!

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
vets only get a few days training in dog nutrition and normally by dry food companies so they are essentially brain washed.
They will tell you your pups will choke on a bone, they will splinter, they don't get enough nutrients from raw meat, food poisoning..... you get the idea!
Have a good luck round the meat isle, i get bones, liver, kidney, heart, all sorts of fish!

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
Vets will tell you that a raw diet is bad for your dog because they don't know any different! As Ella says, they are great for illnesses/broken bones etc, but they don't know that much about the various ways to feed a dog.
If nothing else, a raw diet will keep your dog's teeth sparkling clean & generally speaking will make their food times a joy to watch - they really love it!
You can get raw lamb spines from Morrisons usually. They're good for a dog just starting to eat raw because they're quite thick (so they don't just try & swallow them without chewing), but softer than, say, a turkey or chicken thigh bone.

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
Nowadays, vets actually do receive quite a bit of training regarding nutrition - however, this training is usually either sponsored or entirely conducted by pet food manufacturers.

True, but then I learned about 'nutrition' during 'O' level biology! Didn't help me to find the right food for my dogs, though!

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
There a pros and cons to every feeding regime. Just depends on personal preference, really. I prefer raw to some of the rubbish you get in tinned food.

Re: Raw Meat and Bones diet
I was worried because I fed my dog raw meat at 8 weeks old and I was told that it wasn't good for her.
Some people remarked on how lucky she was to be eating steak. LOL
She now eats lamb, pork, chicken and beef.
She loves fruits too, especially grapes & watermelon. ^_^
I once gave her some leftover Chinese noodles... was this ok?

NO!!!!!!
PLEASE DON'T EVER GIVE HER GRAPES!!!!! THEY ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE KIDNEY FAILURE - EVEN A COUPLE OF THEM (OR GRAPE PRODUCTS SUCH AS RAISINS/SULTANAS ETC) CAN KILL A DOG!!

Wooopppsss, I told a few colleagues about the grape rule and they didn't realize that it's a no-no for dogs. O_O
They were saying that they feed it to their dogs & the dogs love it. Nothing seems to be wrong with them though.
Hmmmm
But ok I won't feed her grapes anymore just to be safe. ^_^

With some dogs they'd have to eat a couple of dozen before they're affected, but with others it's only one or two! Even the experts can't agree why it can be deadly, but they all agree that it can. The jury is out as to the cause - some experts say that it's a fungal growth in the grape, others that it's a copper compound. Others say that there's an enzyme missing that would normally break down part of the chemical composition of the grape.
Whatever the cause, it's best to just not take a chance!

I fed my dog raw meat at 2 months, she seems to have loved it. We also give her chicken neck and usually lamb off-cuts on bone.
