Re: Staffie peeing
would not go that far to have him put down. You could move the radiator to see if he still pees in the same place. They do get a bit like that when they get old but no way would i even consider destroying him unless he was terminally ill or in serious pain. Could also remind him the flap is there for him too

Staffie peeing
I hear what you are saying he has arthritis but dont think that is the prob ,he will not go for walks anymore ,if he does and has done he will slip the lead and go home cross a busy road (lucky he has not been knocked down) so no more walk with him !Wendy and Mark wrote:would not go that far to have him put down. Re: Staffie peeing
12 years old is not the over the hill yet, Moo was playing with her bud today who is 12 (spaniel) just had to have the sister PTS as she had cronic arthritis & tumors, so peeing against a radiator is not much to be phased by.
He needs to be walked, in this weather they all can be stubborn, get a jacket on him and drive him somewhere new.
There isn't much point stating your thinking of having him PTS, and not expect to get negative feed back.

Re: Staffie peeing
sorry but I can understand people 's reactions , I'm quite inexperienced by comparison to some but you will get accidents as they get older and I have been through it myself 3 times with dog and 1 time with a cat and we persevered. They give you so much over the years it's not so much to give some back.
Your dog may well not be at that stage yet anyway and as mentioned it may be a water infection causing these mishaps
As far as the walking is concerned , invest in a harness and then there is no lead slipping to worry about

Re: Staffie peeing
I think you'll find that Dave is a mod. As am I.
I would thank you to keep a civil tongue in your head. You come on here asking if you should have your dog pts because he's peeing on the radiator & you expect polite responses? Think on.
That dog has given you 12 years of (probably) inswerving loyalty. The least you can do is be patient with him in his old age.
Take him to the vet by all means, but not to have him pts - take him so that the vet can make sure he's healthy!

Re: Staffie peeing
Firstly I am an electrician so I can advise you on that , providing your rad is in safe working order and he is not peeing inside it then you have nothing to worry about , but you could try moving it to somewhere he can't reach

What rubbish! What we're saying is that you don't necessarily need to be thinking about putting him to sleep!
Why not try restricting him to a room without a radiator? What about turning that particular radiator off?
Think about what you're saying, please.
Just because I'm a mod doesn't mean I know everything, but as I said, you've come on here saying 'should I take him to the vets to be pts' & then you're rude to people who have answered you. What do you expect us to say? "Yes, have him destroyed - after all, there's nothing you can do to stop him peeing on the radiator"?

Re: Staffie peeing
Do you have a garden you could let him out into so he could pee there ?
We use a harness for walking Rocky with his lead attached to this. The harness is the Ezydog one which I got from Jolleys for about £17.00 you can also get them online from Amazon as in the link below for about the same price. We have the large size for Rocky:

Re: Staffie peeing
I'm not an electrician, but I can't see why a dog weeing on a radiator would set the house on fire?
I'm just gessing here, but I think your old dog is just not liking this cold damp weather, with his arthritis and everything, so is doing his wees as near as he feels able to braving the great outside.
Could you or others in your household just take him out into your garden once in a while (like you would if he were a puppy) and if he does wee out there, praise him, just so he remembers where he should go.

Re: Staffie peeing
I appreciate that we haven't given you the answers you seemed to want, but don't tell us to keep stum & grow up when you have asked a question!
Maybe none of your other dogs have peed where they shouldn't, but they are all different, the same as all humans are different. Have you thought that he may be going slightly senile? Or he might have a bladder or other infection? Have you thought that, at his age & with a touch of arthritis the thought of going outside in the cold was just too much for him?
How many times has he done this & what did you clean the radiator with?

Re: Staffie peeing
the problem is he not getting walked!! i will put money he not getting let out enough else so he doesn't have any where else to wee.
Re: Staffie peeing
im finding it hard to understand why your having trouble with him. Owning a dog takes effort and time. If your not prepared to give your dog that then its time to re home him with someone that has the patience and time to deal with a loyal old dog. You have to change things to accommodate his old age been said in previous posts its not hard to turn the rad off or change his room etc. I cant beleive you want to put him down because he is old

Re: Staffie peeing
Ok - you have an electric radiator in the kitchen and your old dog has taken to weeing against it. I'm guessing this is a stand-alone radiator?
The simple answer is to remove the radiator, if you are concerned about the weeing causing a shorting and therefore fire risk (although modern electric circuits should trip out immediately if there is a short). That should give you peace of mind regarding the fire risk.
Old dogs, like old people, get arthritis - could it be that your dog cannot negotiate the dog flap any more? Or as I mentioned before, it could be that the effort of getting through the dog flap into a cold wet world is just a bit too much for him. In which case, treat him like you would a puppy and put papers down for him to wee on. We all have to make adjustments for old creatures - dogs as well as humans.

Re: Staffie peeing
Perhaps its too cold for him and that flares his ailments. Does he have a coat? Even if you take your dog out of the house for a few mins to pee then back in the problem will stop. He may not like walking cause of the arthritis (is he on meds for that?) but it doesn't mean you should not take him out of the house and make him walk even a little to use the toilet.
Calm your tone down and see it from our perspective, your first post here is asking "should i put my dog down cause it pees inside"

Re: Staffie peeing
I'd take him for an MOT at the vets, see what his issues are (if any) and then u will be better armed on how to accommodate them.
A good vet won't PTS a dog willy nilly. As a responsible owner he is ur responsibility and maby in his twilight years u need to make adjustments or allowances for him. He dosent know what electricity or radiators is.., so it's upto u to make his area safe.
Exercise is great for all dogs, not only physically but mental stimulation is fab.
Make sure his collar or harness is secure, fun walks...take some treats too.

Re: Staffie peeing
Sounds like it's a hardwired radiator.
If that's the case, I would personally get a properly qualified electrician in to isolate it.
I'd then get a lead out and take the dog outside for a wee every hour if he's reluctant to go himself.
Then I'd take him to the vets to have a check-up.
Then I'd get him a winter coat and see what I could do about walking him.
I'd use a harness if he slips his collar.
Should get all that done for 100 quid without destroying the dog.
