Do your dogs rough play with others?
Milo has recently ish (!) turned two and has been very well socialised since his puppy days. He plays with dogs from Jack Russel size to Deer Hound size. Some he's more interested in playing with and others he just walks right by especially if we've not got time to play and keep walking, he'll simply stick with us.
We met with one of my friends yesterday who has a one year old Lab. bitch who he played and played with which is funny because he generally doesn't care for them and gives them a wide berth, I thin k they give off a vibe!! Anyway no matter what dog or what size if they are both willing play buddies he'll try to grab the scruff of their necks or to the side of their necks. He used to be fond of ear grabbing but now it's necks It's not a problem and never escalates beyond this and I do believe it's play, even if it's dominating play.
We have had 3 incidents I can recall where another dog has been actually intentionally aggressive towards him even though it wasn't a proper fight. He has been marked and bled but every time he has not retaliated at all. His roughness only really bothers me because of people mis-interperating his behaviour, am I right to worry?!

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
Staffys are quite know for their rough play, although it usually sounds much worse than it really is. We wouldn't normally let Rocky play rough with most dogs that we know because we know how it will be perceived by certain others at a particular park.
He does have friends that he can play with though who know him very well (and the owners too) and have seen how his behaviour has progressed since we have had him. I guess it just comes down to trust in the end, that your dog trusts in you to sort anything out for him.

They dont consider it rough lol. There alot tougher than most dogs i think to be fair.
Ramsey likes to drag the dog he lives with by his face across the floor. He chews him and jumps all over him. (the other dog actually likes it lol)
Staffs throw there wait around in a friendly excited manner and there heads are solid rocks

That's how Suki plays with dogs that are her size in the park. As long as it's play and both handlers are comfortable with it I don't see it as a problem

Thanks guys, I do trust Milo whilst he is rough in his play and possibly dominant his temperament is not aggressive at all even when others have had a pop at him (and hurt him!) he runs home to mum!
Also this is misleading from my last post .......We have had 3 incidents I can recall where another dog has been actually intentionally aggressive towards him even though it wasn't a proper fight. He has been marked and bled but every time he has not retaliated at all. His roughness only really bothers me because of people mis-interperating his behaviour, am I right to worry?!
These incidents were not a reaction from when he was playing they were random dog meeting events! Actually one was when my friends' retreiver x poodle stole Milos ball and when Milo came near to her she went for him causing a nasty bloodied scrape from her canine on his head!

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
Woody likes to play growly roly poly bitey face but usually only with other bully type dogs, and he plays chase with all the others but hes slow so he cuts corners and cheats haha
If a dogs being aggressive to him I would just call him away quickly so that he never feels the need to fight back, I remember when mine was chased by two huge German Shepherds and he ran away for a while but eventually stopped and turned around to face them so I would hate to think what would of happened if their owner hadn't of grabbed them in time

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
i dont have any time for the dogs that show aggression towards another dog for no reason. Just walk away because the behavior is pathetic and shouldn't be tolerated

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
ah good news yes, just worried how other people perceive us! And is it 'allowed' dog etiquette to let your dog seemingly go for the throat of another dog....in play mind! My friends and regular dog walking buddies and people we meet out and play with regularly all know there's no agression in it and what's interesting is that he plays quietly, not the growly shouty type I know you're speaking of Sarah lol! I guess I'm too aware of the prejudice that our lovely staffs have although I think Milo has made several people change their perspective I can't blame people for the way they think really the media etc hype it up and highlight (and out right lie) about dogs. Plus I'm a hypocrite as I have an instant judgement of German Shepherds! Sorry! I've met a few when out and Milo has played wiht a few and I do know and understand they can be fine and dandy but have that initial judgement regardless

I'm pleased and reassured it's a staff thing, although I'm sure this kind of play doesn't go down well with the ponsey dog brigade!

Our 2 play rough on a daily basis with each other. They jump on each other drag each other by the cheeks bite each others necks etc. They do play with other dogs on the park but never the same as with each other. They just run with the other dogs trying to flip them with their heads

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
The girls play like Milo. Biting faces, ears, legs and necks! they also chest each other on to the floor. You need to be careful who you let him play with as some owners dont appreciate their dog playing 'staffy style'

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
Ours play rough too - biting faces, ears, scruffs, wrestling, nipping..then they break it up to take a breath and come back for more.

Re: Do your dogs rough play with others?
Yes and unfortunately I think that's the only way Mani knows how to play with other dogs. Some understand it's playing, others don't, and the rest pick up the horrified reaction of their owners and take it as actual fighting.
Mani also won't back down from a fight these days, as opposed to his less confident days just after rehoming, so I'm afraid he hasn't played a lot w/ other dogs lately as we just can't take the risk
