Rough play!
I posted a few days ago about alfies biting getting worse when he gets excited and playful, but its getting worse! To the point where its really hurting and hes making me bleed. Im black and blue! Ive tried saying no, turning my back, walking away and even giving him a toy to chew but all these seem to encourage him. Hes even started this ear piercing bark when i try and correct him. Ive started putting him outside when he gets like this for a few minutes to cool off but he just starts again. Is this the right thing to do? He has started nipping my face now and i dont want that to get worse

Re: Rough play!
we use a water spray bottle to calm these 2 down when they playfight with each other. We only use it in extreme circumstances but it does work. Have you tried using a whistle?

Re: Rough play!
When Logan gets like that I put him into my bedroom for a few minutes. He really dislikes this and it normally sorts him right out. Though sometimes I let him out and he is just as bad as before. So I do it again until he gets the point.
As with anything it takes a long time at the start but with time it will require a lot less effort.
Now when I say "do you need to go upstairs" he goes and sits down under the coffee table quietly because he knows I haven't disagreed with him lol.

Yes!
He gets really, really excited when people arrive to the house and takes his excitement out by jumping and mouthing. If I don't correct him right away he will take it too far and it hurts. He doesn't mean to (like Alfie doesn't) but when they are excited they have to release it somehow and they just need shown what is appropriate behaviour.
Put him out and let him cry, then if he's not better behaved when he comes back in do it again right away. I should have said at the start, when you are putting him out do it very calmly as if you aren't bothered in the slightest. Same when you let him in. They pick up on frustration.
Logan is bad with certain dogs and if I'm any way frustrated/nervous he will be 10 times worse. Take a deep breath!

Re: Rough play!
Silly question but how do u say no......as i had to firm my voice up with tyke when he was smaller, i have a high voice and had to keep it the same so he could tell the diff between my normal playfull voice to when its nt appropriate to do what he was doing! No matter how much it hurts try keep it the same and that u need business plus doing what u been doing giving time out.

Re: Rough play!
I have a couple of scars on my arms where Loki's punctured my skin really deep...that was with his puppy teeth. He's also broken my finger by (accidentally) biting my finger instead of the toy, and I'm always covered in bruises. He has no bite inhibition at all, and he hasn't purposely bitten me in a good while now, but when he gets really excited, he can start biting. So yeah, it does hurt, he has strong jaws but it does get better. Your training method is right, Alfie's just...not listening to it just yet but he will. And the bark is obviously just defiance, Loki used to do that when I'd tell him to get off the couch. He'll get there in the end

Re: Rough play!
Good advice, but dosent work with every dog .. Max kinda saw a loud firm NO like me barking at him, so just barked back and got even more excited
When he was a pup I would just pick him up and shut him in the kitchen for 5min where he could see me in the dining room through the glass panelled door, so he realised I was in control of him coming back in, not him! .. then he would usually be in a better frame of mind to listen to me ... he was a proper little sh!t tho, very naughty and very strong willed ... still is really, but in a nice way now, and its part of his caracter

Re: Rough play!
We have been there too. It is a trying stage. The water works for some and not others. Removing him a secluded safe spot will get the point to him fastest in my opinion. Also, everyone who interacts with him has to do the same thing (don't know if this applies to you or if you are the only handler). You will get through it. However, the nips do really hurt!

Re: Rough play!
The loo is a great place for time out as its boring as hell for them. Just two rules, make sure loo rolls, bins and bleach etc is out of the way and second only do it for a max of a min or they forget what its for. When telling them no dont wave about as youll excite the prey drive just do it with eye contact if it does get do much dont worry about over acting it even when there faces drop when they realise theyve hurt you. Marley headbutted me once and put my tooth through my lip, his face said it all and i spent 10 mins reasuring him i was okay before sorting myself out. When a dog understands that they can hurt us you can see how mortified they are when they do it by accident. And marley was just the same as yours to the point i looked like a self harmer sometimes lol. Theres no quick fix just find best way to communicate with the dog about whats acceptable

Re: Rough play!
Have you tried yelping when he bits too hard? I've done that with daisy and she is much better now, it let's her know she's hurt me and she backs off, yelp and then turn your back on him.

Re: Rough play!
Your on the right track really and all dogs are a little different. It just takes time and consistancy. With Suki if I use a louder and more firm voice she stops instantly but will keep at it if I don't.
Since I didn't see it mentioned earlier are you on the floor with him when he does this? If so he thinks it's time for play since you are down on his level.

Re: Rough play!
No im not on the floor, he sometimes starts when i sit on the sofa or even when i stand up to go somewhere hell start biting my hands and my thighs etc so its not even as if he starts when we are in the middle of playing - he seems to start for no reason

Re: Rough play!
You are doing the right things and we have all been there. It can be very frustrating as well. He may be trying to tell you he wants to play or go for a walk as well. Suki was like that and still is to an extent except instead of biting now she will grab something she isn't supposed to have and run around the house taunting us or simply paw at the door and bark.

Re: Rough play!
I think there is something in my training folder about this, probably nothing more that what's been said on here but I'll have a look tonight anyway.

Re: Rough play!
Oh this sounds so familiar, you should see my scars from Katy's puppy teeth. She's much better now but we do still need the occasional time out in the bathroom minus the loo roll (she's done the andrex bit ) I let her out & talk to her as normal, sometimes she will bite me as soon as i let her out so its straight back in for her. Can take a few goes but she gets the message. Does Alfie do Katy's favourite bite, using just her front teeth, like being pinched really hard, doesn't break the skin but i get good bruises

Re: Rough play!
Well it started off really with him just kinda touching my skin with his teeth but he actually got a grip on my upper arm last night with his whole jaw, which, needless to say, hurt!

Re: Rough play!
Yep top of the arm does hurt Katy will bite for no apparent reason & she seems to want my full attention 24/7, if i dare do something else other than be with her she will go & do something she knows she should'nt just to get my attention back on her. I have to get oh to play with her just so i can wash up but even then she will keep coming out to me
