Feeding Time
I have seen while in pets at home a feeding station that raises the dogs food and water bowls off the floor and after doing a little reading it says it helps the digestion. The speed Alfie eats his meals is so fast he gets hic ups. I know he had to fight 7 other pups for his food before we got him so my question is do any of you use them and do they really work? Also do all staff's eat so fast?
Cheers
Iain

Re: Feeding Time
we use step stools as our last gsd had to be pts as he developed serious bloat and the vet said deep chested dogs are prone to it so just in case we now feed them higher it does also slow buster down (althoug when we are away they get their bowls on the floor
I have looked into the raised stations but a £2 step stool works so why change it (also helps when I need to reach the top shelf in the kitchen lol I'm such a shortie)

Re: Feeding Time
Yes I use one but be careful to get the right size, the one above although cute is way too small for a staffy, I found out the hard way

Oh right. It says 8 inches off the floor. Have you used this type before?

Re: Feeding Time
Its the bowl size you have to be careful with. I got this one for Moo,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dogit-Elevated-Dish-Capacity-Black/dp/B0035H36G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358010923&sr=8-1
It was one of largest capacity without being the wire ones and its way too small, I have to take the dish out and just use the plastic bit and even then its a bugger to mix without spilling it!

Re: Feeding Time
To slow him down eating you can put a tennis ball or something in his bowl so he has to eat around it

Re: Feeding Time
raised feeding bowls actually increase the risk of bloat and won't slow them down, i would never use one

It was recommended to me because of Moo arthritis.

Re: Feeding Time
I understand that some cases they are needed, and originally they were said to reduce the risk of bloat, but recent studies have found it massively increases the risk!

Re: Feeding Time
Yeah, I always read it increases the risk of bloat, so I don't use them. I'm not quite sure why it increases it though, you'd assume it's more annoying to have to lower your head so much just to eat
Like Dave said, you can put a tennis ball in the bowl to slow down eating, or they have bowls specifically to slow down eating.

Re: Feeding Time
We bought Obi a slow down bowl. It's brilliant he doesn't eat as fast so less air is gulped in when he eats which means less staffie love puffs

yep they can get bloat eating and doing anything but why have something that will really increase the risk?
