Rescued Staffie
Hello lovely Staffie owners,
I have got a staffie about 18 months old, we have rescued her from the dog pound in Portsmouth.
We cannot get her back if we let her off the lead and she will attack other dogs which are on the lead, she now gets very excited and runs about in the home at 100 miles an hour, and jumps up and mounts hands etc, I want to give her a good home, can anny one assist with some training methods to help me

Re: Rescued Staffie
Respect to you for the staffy rescue
Tough one really.. she's been brought up wrongly obviously. She's not too old to learn new stuff so it can be done but i think your gonna have to be strict with her.
She needs to learn that attacking other dogs is the biggest no!
But my training methods might be frowned upon (Nothing bad lol)

Hi & welcome to the forum.
Well done on rescuing your girl!
First things first - until you are 100% sure that she will come back when you call her, don't let her off lead! Get a long line (you can get them quite cheaply from ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/65ft-LONG-DOG-HORSE-TRAINING-TRACKING-LEAD-IN-VARIOUS-COLOURS-SIZE-LARGE-/230783506563?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&var=&hash=item35bbc4d883 ). Let the line trail, but always make sure that the end is within easy reach. Every so often call her back & if she doesn't return first time of asking, reel her in with the long line.
Never let your dog run up to other dogs unless you first check with the other owner that it's ok! The other owner may not want their dog to play with yours, and the other dog might be dog aggressive & you'll have a full on fight on your hands!
What do you feed her? Not just the type of food, but the brand as well? She sounds hyperactive & this could be the food. If she mouths your hands/feet etc, tell her a firm "No!" or "No bite!" and turn away from her - totally ignore her until she's calm again, don't even look at her. If she carries on, put her out of the room for a few seconds.
And I'm sure you will do!

Re: Rescued Staffie
Best advice I got when I rescued my dog was "give it a month or two for him to settle down". Then it was a question of consistency (see great tips above from Caryll) and patience... lots of patience... and lots of kitchen roll and anti-urine spray.

Re: Rescued Staffie
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Please be patient, Rocky is also from a rescue centre and was a bit like your girl to begin with. Give her some time to settle in with you then she will fall in with your routines.
As far as walks go keep her on a long like until recall is 100%. A good walk of at least 45 minute should be OK for her twice a day.
Do you have some chew toys or games to play indoors, stag bars are great for chewers and are available from Jolleys or Pets at Home.

Re: Rescued Staffie
Hi from me and the Princesses! How long have you had her? You will need to start from basics as if she is a pup. If you have a pal with a well balanced dog take them for a walk together to get her used to other dogs. If you like clicker training there is a book called When pigs fly by Jane killion which is supposed to be good I have the book and the clickers but still haven't used it
