Are we starting to teeth??
Hi everyone hope you and your four legged friends had a lovely christmas? x
Right ive never had a puppy puppy before so have never had to do the whole teething thing, so Marley is reaching 5 and a half months and ive notived since last night his now turning his nose up at his food, so tonight i softned it right down with warm water and some juice from our meat just so he would eat a proper meal and even though he was eating it he was also dropping some out of his mouth whilst eating he was also alot slower than usual and although not whincing as such you could see something was obviously a bit painful, so are we there are we starting to teeth?? If we are whats the best option with food and how long does this whole process take (ive only ever had to do 4 teething babies lol ) any pointers in this subject would be very much appreciate it he looks so miserable to ......Also what is with the dragging his bum across my rug is this something they all do???? x

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
Definately sounds like teething. Frozen treats like a kong will help with the pain. If you are feeding dry food moistening it will help.
Dragging the bum could be that his anal glands are impacted and need to be squeezed. You could do it yourself but it's a bit nasty and alot of people will let the vet do it

Give him some ice cubes to cool his gums down , rubbing his bum on the floor could be his anal glad didn't empty on his last poo , just keep your eye on that , it is usually diet related nothing to worry about .

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
Frozen carrots and lots of tough toys, I wouldn't water it down, but I was a harsh mum those years back! She just got through it!
Bum dragging could be blocked anal glands. Xx

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
The dragging of the bum could also be a sign of worms, when did he last have worming tablets ??

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
His not due his next worm and flea till 20th of january it comes in with our vet package so we get it every 3 months, il keep an eye on the anal gland thing...think that is something il let the vet do
Il make sure i get lots of things in the freezer then if were teething, and do the teething gels you see in pets at home actually work? x

Magnifying glass at the ready
Find some small white stones , they'll do the trick

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
Loads of good advice already given so I won't add to it, but in my experience with several puppies I've only EVER found one shed tooth - they tend to get swallowed! If your 4 year old is really insistent on the tooth fairy thing then Janey's advice is great - small white stones (you might need a lot of them!).
Good luck - most teeth come through without trauma.

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
Good advice re teath but would like to add something bum surfing..they love the feeling so one offs not to be worried about. Its just like us having a good scratch, if its persistant yes see a vet but every now and then and its prob just your pooch enjoying a good bum scratch on your carpet...eww we would never do that would we....lol...well not the carpet anyway

Lol keep an eye on him as dogs have been known to copy us ;-) if you do find hubby bum surfing your carpet a threat of a trip to docs for an anal gland squease should nip it in the bud

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
Just a quick question, after him letting me have a good mouch round in his mouth his mouth is very sore lots of loose teeth and lots of bleeding gums ive decided from tomorrow morning im going to put him on the packs of frozen meat you buy from the pet store as he is not eating his kibble at all, trouble is by the time the pet store opens in the morning we would have missed marleys breakfast, so can i perhaps give him some porridge for breakfast as a substitute?? x

Re: Are we starting to teeth??
One missed food meal wont hurt at all as long as they have water they have fat reserves to cope with a few hours of missing a meal. By all means sustitute but you wont be hurting anything as a one off. Do you measure out? Can make it so much easier to keep track of food intake so you can up it or reduce if needed

I always measure his food, we weigh him every couple of weeks as his changing so much at the moment and then his food gets changed accordingly
