Re: treating for fleas
I use Effipro flea treatment on Rocky every 8 weeks regardless of time of year. Pet Supermarket have it for £12.06 for 4 treatments.
The lady in the flat above us has a dog which most probably has fleas and I dont want Rocky to catch any of them. This is another story that I will refrain from going into here.

Re: treating for fleas
I won't ever treat for fleas unless I see them on Dempsey. Then I use one of the spot on treatments from the vet - I think it's frontline, but I really can't remember!

I use frontline every 8 weeks. Once started, you just carry on. Plus theres loads dogs where we walk, and I would prefer to be safe than sorry. Dont blame you that dont use it.

That's the bit I don't like, though. Why use harsh chemicals on them if they're not needed?

Re: treating for fleas
I know Caryll, its just since Jan when we brought her home, she was done at the blue cross, and we just carried it on. Habit I suppose plus the fear of her getting fleas. We do walk alot through woods too, and I suppose I dont want her getting ticks either. I have been bitten by cat fleas very bad! We brought our house that needed loads work doing to it, took a year, and well there use to be a cat there, never saw it, but the fleas were still alive and boy my legs just got bitten! So I think thats another reason why too.

Re: treating for fleas
When I took over our present home we also had an infestation of cat fleas! They're buggers, but we got rid of them with various sprays etcDempsey is walked through woods & has some contact with other dogs, but we haven't had to de flea him. If I saw a flea I would just get something for that one time & wash his bedding with the addition of some tea tree oil.
I just think that dogs get enough chemicals with vaccinations & some of the commercial food that's out there, without adding unnecessary ones.
Each to their own, though.

Re: treating for fleas
Caryll I agree, that dogs get enough chemicals as it is with vaccinations etc. I did wonder about whatever to stop the frontline, if its really worth it, but hey I just carry on for my own reasons. But it is worth thinking about.

I also use garlic and in 17 years I have never had a flea or tick on any of my dogs ( which included 3 very long haired GSDs )

I either give a crushed clove a day or every other day just straight on their food
