Re: Rawhide bones
I'd recommend stag bars over rawhide. Rawhide can be dangerous, it goes gooey and can be a choking hazard.

Re: Rawhide bones
Rawhide swells in a dog's stomach, so if he bites off a larger piece than normal it could cause a dangerous blockage. I won't give them at all.

Stag bars are a much safer option and are available from Jolleys and Pets at Home or online from Amazon.

Re: Rawhide bones
I don't use them at all either.. They swell and are a choking and blockage hazard Stag bars are heaps longer lasting anyway..

Re: Rawhide bones
I have always used rawhide knot bones. One of my dobermann pups swallowed one (a smallish one!) whole - I was worried then (about 30 years ago now) and my vet did tell me I shouldn't have given her such a small one, but reassured me that a dog's stomach acid is stronger than ours and would deal with it. And she was fine.
I would suppose that a Staffy's stomach is smaller than a Dobermann's stomach, but I would need strong evidence of actual harm caused by rawhide to stop using it; I find it a godsend, especially with the crevices stuffed with cooked liver.
I do appreciate others' opinions and advice regarding rawhide (and yes it does swell when it gets soggy) but personally unless and until I have actual evidence of harm being caused by it, I will continue to use it.

Re: Rawhide bones
I have heard of dogs needing surgery to remove pieces of rawhide that have swollen in the stomach and caused blockages, some (can't remember the make) have been found to have lead pellets in!

Re: Rawhide bones
Yes, obviously don't use any rawhide product that have used metal to stitch them together (like those little shoe things).

Re: Rawhide bones
erm no it wasn't one that stitched it together pellets were found in flat rawhides they should not have ever been there......

Kylie have you managed to locate stag bars in Australia? I have tried but no one has even heard of them. Can't order them through the UK company either as they are unable to ship to Aus.
If anyone can help, I'd love to try Zoey on them.

Re: Rawhide bones
Thanks Kylie, that's great! They only have the medium in stock at present, think I'll wait for the larger sizes to come in.
