The importance of worming (WARNING: Very graphic pictures)
The following pictures is about two pups copied from Crosskennan Lane Sanctuary. Put the pictures first so people can skip the text if they want.
This puppy did not survive.
This is the bowe
l
This is more worms removed during surgury
The surviving puppy.
When our vet examined them he observed that both were severely dehydrated and had chronic diarrhoea – but the little male merle coloured pup also received treatment to bring down his temperature. Our vet administered fluids and gave us rehydration powders to syringe into them along with a special sensitivity diet. Whilst initially the little boy perked up, it wasn’t long before he started to go downhill during the night, so was taken back to the vet 1st thing the following morning. On examination, our vet could feel a blockage in the pups gut and immediately took him through to perform emergency surgery. To his horror, when he opened the pups bowel it was completely compacted with worms throughout the entire bowel! Due to the size and volume of worms, the vet had to cut open both ends of the bowel to manually pull the worms out before stitching the little pup back together again. He was taken to intensive care and given round the clock nursing to give him the best possible chance of survival. However, unfortunately, just 72 hours after his operation, the little boy took a severe seizure, most likely caused by one of the worm larvae migrating through his bloodstream to his brain. He had to be put to sleep due to brain damage. We were devastated – it just seemed so unfair that he died simply because the trader was too negligent to administer a single £2 worm dose. Tragic.

If you feed raw you need to worm more often than you do if you feed complete, always make sure you buy a quailty wormer not one out of the supermarket...

A veery good point. Store bought (unless it is drontal which PAH do) should never be used. I buy one tablet from my vet and it cost me less than a fiver for that plus two tablets for my cats.

I still only worm Dempsey every 3 months - that's sufficient.

was going to ask earlier if this was true as i was under the impression raw would be just as safe if not safer than kibble/wet as all animals in the food chain are up to date wormed before slaughter so no real chance of worms being present in the meat.
