Young dog licking and harrasing others to play
Hi guys ,Bruce is growing up fast now hes been well socialized every day down the park since he was old enough around 12 weeks old. hes just reached 7 months now. He keeps running up to other dogs and jumping up on them and trying to lick their mouths hes so cheeky! I no hes just excited and wants to play, but the problem is he ignores the warning signs but still wants to jump on them. He got bitten by another dog on the nose quite bad the other day and it drew blood! but hes ok
do u think he will have to learn by himself?
or can i stop this?
Thanks Aaron and Bruce

Do you introduce to other dogs on lead?? I find it best to do all intros on lead so you can control the situation..

I did that all when he was younger.basically hes full trained comes back etc when you call him. I take him out and there is usually a massive group of people down the field there so I let him off his lead and they all go round smelling each other and they are all of the leads. Its just occasionally there will be a dog who doesn't like his excitable antics with him being young they growl etc .then Ill call him to stop jumping up on them and then hes ignorant doesnt come back and starts jumping all over them licking their faces its like he wants them to bite him? he only leaves it when they go to bite him nastyly?

Unfortunately at his age he is becoming a teenager, so a lot of training that he had all worked out as a pup needs to be reinforced again.. A lot of people need to go right back to basic puppy training again.. You may need to pop the lead back on for a while and retrain his recall so that if you see him harassing another not so friendly dog you can get him back to you.. Have you tried using a long lead? perhaps that is an option for you to control the situation while he can still run and play

I'd love to give you advice, but I have the same problem. Loki does the same thing, he's so excitable, he means no harm, but he's a silly fool that thinks everyone is as playful and friendly as him all I can really suggest, unless someone with more experience can give more advice, is that if he starts annoying another dog, just take him away for a moment to calm down and then re-introduce them. I'd put him back on the lead when he first meets dogs so that you can move him away if he's getting too boisterous for the other dog. As for the licking, I read that licking the mouth is a sign of submission, so I'm sure he's just playing and getting too excited.

Suki had a huge problem with this when she was that age. If it was a new dog we always made sure to speak with the handler first to make sure their dog was okay with other dogs. Then we would introduce them both on lead to see how they got along. If that went well we would move to the long line and finally off lead.
If she got too excitied or we noticed she was annoying the other dog we would have her sit until she calmed down and then bring them back together.
Also we would walk her before playing with other dogs so her energy levels weren't as high.

If he still doesn't have manners then you should keep him on lead until properly introduced, and if he gets too exuberant or misbehaves, put him back on the lead for a couple of minutes to calm down.
Having said that, no dog should be allowed to just run up to another dog without the other dog's owner's agreement. You're asking for trouble if they do.
