Re: licking
Blue started to do this.
If there is ever a behaviour I am trying to get rid of I always find it best to instead of trying to get rid of it, replace it instead with a behaviour you do want.
So when Blue would lick me I would say "Sit" and once he did that praise him/her with stroking. When he/she goes to lick stop stroking and say "Sit" again. He/she should get the message thats the behaviour you prefare and the one that gets him/her the most attension.

Agree with Blue. Praise the behaviour you want and ignore what you don't. When he licks you totally ignore and move out the way, a firm 'No', and leave it as that. I personally think Staffs are rather 'licky' dogs (not a great word but you know what I mean) mine goes to town, but only when she is let too.

Re: licking
Licking of the mouth or ears is a sign of affection but constant licking when ever petted or anything else is a sign of unsureness whether he is unsure of your touch unsure of what you want from him. him licking you when you walk up the stair he's not sure of your movement and bad behaviour yes i said bad because it can lead to many things like obsession which can be hard to get a dog out of once he has turned it into habit.
I very firm no, move him away with your body (stand and walk towards him till he backs away claiming your own space) out of your personal bubble, until you are ready to invite him in, kind of like asking him to give you a little space and respect that you have your own space just like he does.

Re: licking
Dempsey's the same, and so was Bandit. They are a very affectionate breed.
However, they also do it because they like the taste!! They can taste salt on the skin & they love it, but it can become a really annoying habit!
I agree with BlueStaffBlue - give him something else to think about and he'll soon get out of the habit.

Re: licking
Hmm they do LOVE to lick its a big stafford habit. I've found though ignoring them when they lick and stroking when they stop.
I don;t mind them licking my hands but I hate it on my face and neck (so sloppy!), my girls are used to it, they don't even try to lick me but they smother my other half every times they see him! Shows they will learn who likes it and who doesn't.

Well thats what I say but the boyfriend insists he "Likes it". How anyone could like two staffs and a JRT slobbering all over their face is beyond me
