Aggresion with other dogs.
Hey my lil staff seems to have problems with other dogs.
When he was a wee pup he was happily sniffing along with a huge German Shepherd then this lil westie/ yorkie thing came and bit them both on nose.
Needless to say they both snapped and the terrier came off quite bad but since then my staffs not been near a dog without being aggressive.
Ive managed to get it so if i have a toy on me i get him to concentrate on that but its not an ideal solution as id like to get him playful with other dogs.
Hes coming up to 3 now, so unfortunately has spent a couple years not liking other dogs.
Other to this problem hes an bsolutely brilliant, loving character filled little devil who brings light to a crap day.
Any tips anybody?
Will get a picture of him up on my profile when im not at work

Do you know someone with an older well socialized dog you could walk him with?

As J says an older well socialised dog for walking is a great step forward. The spots sound like an allergy , do you walk in long grass etc, started walking anywhere different ?? a couple of pics may help

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Yeah a few but even my dads spaniel (who is the most laid back dog ive ever met-contrary to its breed) turned aggressive towards my staff.
Its like he says things in dog language and winds up happy dogs then turns aggressive himself.
Also been out with another big softie of a staff and a very well socialised full english.

Yeah he does sometimes go in long grass but is mainly kept tp the same park most walks (huge park so loads to go).
Ive thought it may be an allergy. I will have to get some pictures when im at home.
If it is allergy do you think it would be a expensive trip to vets or some public available remedy?

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
so you start off gently , keep the dogs well apart, and both on lead stand around having a chat and see if he eventually starts to settle and ignore the other dog

You can try a half a piriton tablet and see how he responds but please post some pics here first and get other opinions that are more experienced with this than me

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
yeah he seems to be ok walking next to it however off the lead is a no go. I suppose its gonna be real small baby steps this far down the line.
I just dont want it to get to him or another dog being seriously injured.

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
well this is the whole point as you say , baby steps . You get him to ignore the other dog, then get a bit closer (over a few walks not a few minutes) and just get him comfortable. Obviously the other owner needs to be fully aware and dog savvy. Hopefully then you get to a point where you can let them off and this is where along training line would come into play. Most important is that they don't feel that they are being pushed together and only take the next step when you get positive results from the first

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
yeah i will get some pics later.
I must say, this is my first time on here after hearing alot about this forum.
I am thoroughly impressed at the quick responses and will definately making this website a daily fave!!.
I think your right, im gonna put a shout at to the many dog friends to see if anyones ok.
Would you suggest potentially muzzling on first couple of meetings?

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Personally I don't like the idea of muzzling unless it is 100% neccesary as the dogs have a bad name with people as it is a muzzle is visually terrifying to these doubters and they don't realise what the story is behind it and how you are trying to be a good responsible owner, but it's something you must judge for yourself. A muzzle may also make your dog panic if he has never had to wear one before and that can promote an aggressive response.
It's your call at the end of the day but I would avoid a muzzle for initial meetings as the dogs won't get that close, you may like to think about it for that closer meeting initially (your choice) but I would certainly make sure he is used to the idea of wearing it before that date

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
You can start the walk with the handlers in the middle and the dogs on the outside. Once the energy levels are down and the dogs are used to each other you can bring them toward the middle

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Oh yeah you will get those zero brain celled chaps who have no idea how good staffies are!
I used to muzzle him when he was at his worst, i mean hes calmed down significantly since giving him the chop for xmas last year.
Stopped muzzling a while back leading up to the neutering as an attempt to ween him back to society.

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
I can't give any advice on the spots, but definitely walking him with a calm, non-aggressive dog could help, but don't expect miracles of course, it can take a while, and even then it isn't guaranteed that he'll be fine with dogs then. But maybe he'll have one or two dogs he'll eventually be able to play with. Unfortunately, some dogs just don't get along with other dogs, but they're still very happy dogs

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Good luck with the agro ... my last staffy was "ruffed up" at 10mths by a mutt on the feild where we lived at the time, and it was like flicking a light switch .. from that point on he was a complete liability if there was another four legged animal within sight (no matter how far away) .. we obviously learned to live with it, and he was just about the perfect pet apart from that, and it still hurts to talk about him 3yrs later tbh
Some just cant control it no matter what you try ... so literally 30seconds of bullying by another dog was all it took to "spoil" our boy

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Macy had some red spots on her belly few weeks ago and the vet gave her antibiotics that worked brilliantly. I would not give her any pills without consulting the vet. They usually charge 30 pounds for visit and 30 for medicine however some vets dont charge you for the visit if they give you medicines and you get them from them. It might be worth asking the vet if he would do this you never know he may say yes and then you only pay for medicines but at least youre at peace of mind.

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Lily gets spots on her chest, they look a bit like human spots. I just leave them. My fella says they're ant bites but I'm not convinced.

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
Do you know of any calm, well socialised dogs you could walk with ?? Have you thought of any training classes ??
The bumps could be an allergic reaction to something. Probably best to ask the vet when you are next in.

Re: Aggresion with other dogs.
My girl is dog aggressive unfortunately and i have never been able to let her play with other dogs, but it is at the point i can walk her near dogs without her going berserk and i can let her get within the red zone of a friends dog and they walk together. Total aggressive behaviour can be hard to eliminate so you may never be able to let him play with other dogs the way you want him to. But training will get him to a point he can be controlled.
