staffy toys
hi,
we have a 9 month old staffy puppy who wasnt really trained before we got him 4 weeks ago.
we have tried to teach him to play but so far he's eaten 3 tennis balls, 2 tuggy rope thingys, 5 squeaky toys and numerous towels. (he even ripped apart a large rolled hemp rug thingy that is supposed to withstand doberman attacks!
how can we teach him to play nice? and what sort of toys should we be looking for?

Re: staffy toys
Hi, and welcome!
Yes, Staffs are very hard on their toys, I have to replace Kuchar's toys quite often.
You will find that many Staffy owners recommend stag bars and they are very robust; it's just unfortunate that my pup isn't as enthralled with it as others seem to be, worth a try though.
What Kuchar adores more than anything, and is standing up pretty well to his enthusiastic playing, is a green rubber duck from Pets At Home. (It looks like a road kill green rubber duck ie flat). It has the most amazing squeak, and after a couple of months, although Kuchar HAS torn one of its legs, the squeal continues. I am sure I will have to replace it eventually, but it has lasted 3 months so far.

Re: staffy toys
Staffy's kill toys and do not know the meaning of play nice, buy tough and cheap Seriously do not spend a large amount of money unless we are talking a good Kong Toy or a Boomer Ball, anything else will not last minutes ( I know to my peril) If you use rope toys take them away when they are frayed and redress or bin them otherwise you spend ages analysing poo in the garden wondering "how did that get in there"

Re: staffy toys
he had a squeaky burger toy that my dad bought him, he was terrified of it as it made a noise, at first... i went to work and when i came home, all that was left was the bottom of the burger! i tend to let him play with a tuggy and when he's finished playing, take it away and hide it and he's already eaten a few!

Re: staffy toys
Spend a lot of money on a toy that's meant, but not guaranteed, to last long. Or...buy cheap toys that last a few minutes

Re: staffy toys
kongs, stag bars and a boomer ball I haven't found anything else that will last. Cardboard boxes will keep them entertained for a little while and are cheap

Re: staffy toys
i was very tempted to get him a few cardboard boxes. although he doesnt know how to use a dustpan and brush yet. lol
will look into some of the toys you recommend, the hemp roll thingy we bought him cost me £7.99, it lasted him about a week!

A list of tough toys in the link below, should be helpful:

Oh, and don't forget empty drinks bottles (plastic of course!) I half squash one and put the lid back on tight. Kuchar will play with this for quite a while and it's free so doesn't matter if he punctures it. Noisy though!

Re: staffy toys
dont really mind about the noise to be honest, just as long as he doesnt swallow it. when we got him he was on antibiotics coz he swallowed a piece of plastic!

Re: staffy toys
I'm sorry to hear that your pup swallowed a piece of plastic and had to have anti-biotics. Is he OK now? What happened?
To be honest, much as I adore our fur-baby, I would go mad if I worried about every little bit of rubbish he might ingest. Puppies especially will chew anything and everything they can get their paws and teeth on, unless they are crated up away from anything they might chew. Dogs are rubbish hoovers and the majority of this rubbish will be pooed away; worst case, sicked up.
Dogs' stomach acid is much stronger than ours. Obviously, don't give your pup something that is obviously dangerous, but I can't think that a semi-squashed plastic bottle fits into this category.
However, ignore the plastic drinks bottles if they worry you. There are plenty of other dog toys out there!

AH this explains why randomly Beryl picked up an empty plastic bottle yesterday and started trying to eat it, I took it off her, didn't realise people would give them as toys ( she's rescue so guessing this must have been the case in the old home!!)

Re: staffy toys
Nyla bones and nyla rings last for a few months with even the strongest chewers, the big realistic looking ones seem best and they come in plain chocolate and chicken flavours, they make no sticky mess......brilliant

Re: staffy toys
Would also recommend a stag bar if no one else has already, they are available in Jolleys and Pets At Home.

Re: staffy toys
we're not really sure what happened with the plastic to be honest, there are conflicting reports. his previous owner said that he swallowed a bit of plastic, but her partner said it was because he inhales his food and some of it compacted. either way, whatever it was got lodged and instead of opening him up, they put a tube down this throat and pulled it out and gave him precautionary antibiotics just in case.
I have looked into those stag bars, he has a boomer ball already, im not sure he's a fan as he hasnt been able to sink his teeth into it!
he got hold of a cardboard tube from when i was wrapping presents yesterday, he was loving that!
thanks for all your suggestions guys!

Re: staffy toys
Just bought a Kong for Kuchar today. I hadn't done so before because they are quite expensive (£14 at PAH) and I didn't want it sitting round like an expensive decoration.
Half an hour (good going in itself) with him playing with it empty, I put some pieces of cooked liver in it. He's still working on it as I speak - oh the bliss.

Stag bars - our Skye loves them, and they last for ages!

Re: staffy toys
I stuff Bacchus' kong with cooked sweet potato mashed up with a little peanut butter and a few bits of dried liver mixed in, then frozen. Keeps him amused for all of ten minutes
