Blue Paul Terrier
I was just visiting a couple of dog websites and came across a breed of dog called the Blue Paul Terrier, which I had never heard of before, but by all accounts it was a Scottish variant of the early "bull and terrier" but is now extinct. The interesting point here is that they were bred with staffies in the early days and that is where the distinct blue staffies emerged, which continue to this day. You learn something every day.
Here is a link on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Paul_Terrier and there is more information if anybody interested does a search on Google.

That's all I could find as well. It appears that they became extinct before photography really existed.

In Steve Stone's book 'celebrating staffordshire bull terriers' there is a whole chapter on where the breed came from and theres are a few paragraphs on the blue paul. You can see the similarities to the stafford and where the blue colouring came from. Thats the only sketch I've seen too, wish there were some photos or even paintings!

I have it too! Very good book. Steve Stone was a lovely man who I corresponded with via email on several occasions. A real gentleman & a vast knowledge of staffs & the old staffy breeders.

Now that he has passed away It means even more that he signed my copy of "celebrating Staffordshire Bull Terriers"
You can't get the E books anymore. I wanted to buy them a few years ago and had to contact Steve because the website wouldn't accept payment and he was shocked i even found the website, he told me they did away with the e books and most of that information was incorporated into the CD that came with his new book. I still would have liked to take a peek at the e book. Oh well!

He passed Jan 5, 2010
Here is a lovely website in his memory. A good read and if you make a donation (of any size) you can look at photos from his personal collection

Re: Blue Paul Terrier
hi peeps just wanna throw a wee spanner in your thinking here lol
the blue paul is not the blue paul but the blue poll a poll being a young bull that has been dehorned making it definately a bull terrier and was probably a genetic mutation of the breed in its early days only showing up 1 pup in so many litters totally different to the rest of the litter but consistant and sought after until the mutation dies out leaving none to be found and its origins shrouded in mystery
what do you think?

Re: Blue Paul Terrier
The Blue Paul was around way before the breeds of Staffordshire Bull Terrier & Bull Terrier were even in existence! It was (so they say) a type of bull & terrier or a lighter weight mastiff type dog.
Whether it really had any influence on the breed is open to conjecture!
