Todays learning curve
Whilst on our beach walk we were messing about as usuall, when i stupidly thought i wonder just how placid sky is. so i began a little game of rough n tough, that was my big mistake, i soon found out if i wanted to play tough she was more than able. Lesson learned she is as tough as she needs to be. so another good day in staffy land.

Re: Todays learning curve
Yes, Teddy does the "Oh so you want to play rough"
I have had to teach him "No Bites" as a command
If I stamp my foot in front of him in the garden he play bows then goes off at 1000 mph around the garden and grabs at my trouser legs with full on Staffie teeth.
But the same dog will take a gravy bone off me so gently if I hold it between my teeth.

Was playing a game of roll-and-pin-down with foster dog not 10 minutes ago and, in her excitement, she licked my ear, then grabbed it in her teeth and yanked.

Re: Todays learning curve
The only time I play rough with Loki is when playing tug-of-war. He almost dislocated my shoulder . He always accidentally bites my finger though, and my god it's even worse than his puppy bites, just that it doesn't break the skin. Must learn to have faster reflexes

I've learnt to be very careful with Tilly when she's got a stick as she is so excited and just jumps and grabs , not particularly bothered if its the stick or a finger...ouch

lol you'd think we'd learn after watching them play together, hanging off each other etc. when I play with marley his fav trick is to run out the room and then back in again spring volt of the sofa arm and land on me.... cute when he was a pup... a lesson learnt about what you let a pup get away with or pay for it when they grow up.

Re: Todays learning curve
So far since having Dexter I have had one split lip (from being headbutted during play) one ripped pyjama leg, and lost a bit of hair when he has trodden on it during us rolling around. I will never learn, it's too much fun even with the vague injuries

I don't mind it - it's never enough to hurt. But I suppose I should stop doing it, or whoever adopts her will be wondering why their dog enjoys rough and tumble.

Re: Todays learning curve
Hi All
new here and loving the fight club tales, I had a fight with my boy every night, I would lay on my back (staffie position) roll up my sleeve and waive my arm like an angler fish lure.
he would side swipe it with his paw and try to kill my hand while I tried to grab his tongue!
Early days soft mouth training pays off big time and a safe command like "thats enough" used if he got too excited (he would then lay dow chin to floor) was all that was needed to keep thing safe.
In ten years I never once got bitten, the odd nail scratch or trodden hair sure but that's all......................christ I miss him
A good method to train this I found was to cry ouch ouchhhh in a whimpering way if the bites were getting too strong.
The last thing your Staff wants to do is actually hurt you and they seem to recognise what whimpering means.
You can test this whilst playing a tugging game, when they won't let go, touch your dog's mouth or teeth and pretend to be hurt....see what happens.

Re: Todays learning curve
Hi Dicon - bite inhibition training from a pup is something I've always sworn by.
SO sorry you lost your boy - they don't live long enough do they and although we know it will happen it hurts SO much when they go.
When the time is right I hope you will find another boy (or girl) to share your life with.
Best wishes
