Is it safe to let 8 week puppy in garden before vaccinations where foxes have been?
Bit worried as foxes are often in our garden. Winnie only had her first vaccination yesterday and she has been going in the garden constantly since Saturday. Is this ok?

alot of people dont agree with puppy pads because of training twice BUT when i had vinnie we wouldnt let him out ONE because of foxes and maybe rats and also stray cats!, TWO because my previous staffy had been out so if he happend to have had anything then vinnie would of caught it.
So we puppy pad trained him
So we puppy pad trained him

The only things your pup would be more likely to pick up from a fox (and even then, it's very unlikely without close contact) are parvovirus, the toxocara worm & mange. But then you could bring any of these things home on your shoes etc without even knowing. If you make sure that all fox poo is disposed of & the area treated with a solution of 1 part bleach to 30 parts water you'll be ok.
You shouldn't have any problems as long as your pup does not come into direct contact with a fox, which is highly unlikely, I would have thought!

Have to agree with caryll..... even tho you dotn want to take puppy out side the garden, your own yard should be safe enough and to be honest if you just hose some bleach around like caryll suggested it will be fine.
I think their own immunity from their mum helps protect them till about 12 weeks of age... maybe just take her out to the same "clean" spot each time..use your "wee" word (or what ever you choose to use) and then pick her up and take her back inside...
cant wait to see some pics

you'll know what pups are like with "poo" the parvovirus can be picked up from feces and live in the ground for a good year especially in grass thats why i'd always chose concrete over grass any day easily cleaned and all, so if it possible try to stick to the patio and clean it regulary with the solution Caryll suggested. just keep an eye on her while she is out side not licking eating anything, if you have toys out there clean them and try to keep them to the patio area.

Yes Gem, I am the same Claire that was looking for a puppy. Now I have little Winnie and she's gorgeous. Melting everyone's hearts. I was actually veryt concerned about this issue and contacted my vet first thing this morning and was told that it would ok to go in the garden. I did try to encourage her to go toilet on the patio but I think there's just somethiing about grass that makes them go! Have to say though, I know its early days but I am religiously taking her out every hour but most of the time she doesn't want to go out. As the weather is a bit cold and wet and especially when its dark, she just sits at the back door and refuses to come out when I call her so I have to put a collar and lead on her which she doesn't like either. Sometimes I end up just carrying her to her designated spot, plonking her down with the lead on and then she goes but once shes been she yanking me to go back in doors. I just don't know whats best. Its easier said than done, calling and encouraging her to follow you!

You're doing fine! If you need to put collar & lead on, that's ok - it'll help her get used to them for when you can take her out!
Good advice there!

Thats very odd my vets current and old ones have always told me to stay away from grass areas and if i want to walk them keep to concrete because nothing can live on it and it gets washed regulary with rain etc but grass and mud don't, they tend to keep the nasties alive alot longer. Except parvovirus that can live on any surface for about a year.

Molly was going out in our garden from 8 weeks old, she was being walked at the beach from 8 weeks old, yes not advised, but she was going insane in the house.
She has been completely fine, she walks through mud, rotting sea weed, cow poo >.< etc etc.
As Mel said, they get some immunity from their mother.
One thing my vet recommended when we first got Molly was to put her inside my jacket and carry her around if you really don't want to walk her, that way she'll begin to get socialised and get used to the surroundings and traffic etc etc.
It sounds like you're doing a brilliant job! Keep up the good work, it all pays off!
