Puppy vaccinations

I really apologise if this sounds stupid, but a debate has began amongst our family and it's annoying me.

My mother in laws vet has told her that they will not vaccinate her pup (My Saffys brother) till he's 10 weeks old. He's quite a big chunky boy, healthy etc.

Now I was always under the impression the first set is at 8 weeks, then 10 weeks etc. In fact my Saffy is booked to go have hers on Sunday.

I phoned my vet, they said 8 weeks, I looked on the RSPCA website and that said 7-8 weeks, as did the Dogs Trust's and all the other various sites on the Interwebs.

And my (Yorkies) dogs have always been started at 8 weeks.

So just to confirm with everybody here, with all the years of experience you guys have -it's 8 weeks right?

Honestly this isn't the only thing this particular vet has said in relation to these puppies, which I found suspect. But my MIL is taking their word as gospel truth.

What has annoyed me most, is that all the pups were meant to go to puppy class and their first walk together (for moral support lol) but now looks like some will have to be left out.

8-9 weeks is normal, but you won't be able to take him out until he gets the second set which will be a few weeks later.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Because they are allowed out at 11-12 weeks. A week after their 2nd round.

Thats right, 8 weeks if the pup is a normal size, healthy etc.

My vet said 10wks until she asked what breed, then she said we do staffys at 8 wks to enable walks sooner than other pups 'as they have a lit of energy'

Anyway I hand my pup done at 9 and 11 wks. Only cause he was in a state when we got him and I wanted him to get a bit bigger before bombarding him with jabs x

I did take him out before his last jab, but I carried him all the time. For 3 weeks I carried him around so he could get used to the outdoors and all the kids at the school etc.

We got Zeus's first injection done at 8 weeks, second at 10 weeks and then start taking him out for walks at 12 weeks. All advised by our Vet's and breeders where we got him from, and this forum!

Mine do 8 weeks, but ask you to wait until you've had the pup for a week. So mostly, they're done at 9 & 11 weeks.

Yeah all the puppies are an excellent weight and in very good health according to said vet. I know Saffy was 4.5kg at 7.5 weeks. And the boys are chubbier than her. But I can't remember what they weighed in at. So health not a prob.

Jackie: yes my vet said to me that they tend to do the smaller breeds and pups that need a bit of help, a bit later on. Tho didn't say when.

And that's what I'm doing with Saffy too! Carrying her everywhere lol.

It might seem I'm in a bit of a rush, but I'm just keen to get her socialised as early as poss. Plus they soak up so much at this age. I want her to big a confident adult.

Personally i'd vaccinate at 10 weeks as up until at least then they have all the antibodies from mum and early vaccinating can cause problems or not work at all

Here vets do not vaccinate puppies until they are 12 weeks old and the second vaccination is given when puppies are 16 weeks old. I'm not a vet and can't tell what is right, but I think it make sense what ella wrote.

To Ella and Walpuri, I really don't know enough about the subjec to make my own opinion on it either way. And while it might seem lazy to not research it further, I suspect that if I did, I would possibly come across conflicting opinions/evidence on the matter, that will likely just confuse me!

So I will stick to my vets recommendations on this one, which is I believe a 3rd vaccine shot at 16 weeks. But I will of course be discussing this.

There are two vet practices in my town and one does the first vax at 8 weeks, the other 10. Don't know whether that's down to what they think is best or whether they use different brand vaccinations and the manufacturer's recommendations are different...

See i did do a lot of research into, which is why i don't vaccinate at all after the first year booster.

But basically pups have all the antibodies against parvo etc from mum in the milk, once weaned they stay in their system up until about 10-12 weeks where they start to decrease which is when you start the vaccination course. This then boosts the immunity up so once the 'mums antibodies' have gone so to speak they then have their own immunity.....

So early vaccinating can make a lot of pups poorly....and believe you me i take everything my vets say with a pinch of salt and then do what i want anyway

did any of you have dogs vaccinated with neopar (the live virus parvo?) It is approved for dogs at high risk (and I guess that can include bully breeds) starting at 5-6 weeks--because it's live it stimulates immunity even though the pups have passive immunity from mom's antibodies. Cal's first 2 parvo were neopar from our breeder, then she got two more standard ones from our vet.

I have mine done at 8 weeks too. my vet uses Duramune DAPPi + LC which according to the manufacturers can be given at 6 weeks.
One of the reasons for a jab at 8 weeks is that there is a slight chance of some pups not having the full effect of mothers protection. you can have an antibody test done but it costs more than the vaccination itself.
The second jab immunises against anything that the puppies natural immunity took care of in the first jab but is now less able to defend against.
I suspect the difference of opinion between vets is when weighing up the risk factor of the pup being exposed to any of the viruses. if there was an out break of parvo in the area I guess most vets would vaccinate as early as possible. even though your pup wont be on the groud outside until after the second jab you can never be sure to have trodden something into the house and you know how they love chewing shoes ;o)

Just to concur, Tommy was 8 weeks, then 10 weeks, limited walking (no dog parks etc) at 11 weeks, he should have a 3rd Parvo jab at 15/16 weeks but our vet is doing it at 14 wks because we are going on holiday to the beach etc immediately after

first time iv heard of a pup having a third jab do they leave the parvo out of first course dave

my vets the same caryll ask you to have pup for a week before first jab

Same as Dave, Saffy will be having another at 16 weeks.

And Saffy was with us 6 days before her jab, so nearly a week
