I bet this won't make the press!!!
I had the unfortunate job of taking a dog to be put to sleep yesterday.
He was a 7 month old border collie that had attacked his owners 14 year old daughter, left her needing 30 stitches in her face! I do not blame the dog in any way. After speaking to the owner who obviously had no idea how to raise a dog or the need for walking and working a dog (he had never been on a lead!)
I was appauled to say the least. The vet had the good sense to have some harsh words. She explained that a puppy of this age should not be aggressive in this way (believe me this dog WAS aggressive I had to muzzlle him just to get him on a lead then had major issues getting him into the car)
I am heart broken that this pup was PTS through no fault of his own but would just like to make the point that if this was a staff it would be the local headline!!!

Gutted for the poor dog.
What chance do they have when their owners don't know how to raise them?
I'd be in favour of a mandatory training course for people wanting a first time dog - done at the vets or something.

I know, it's heartbreaking, isn't it? A staff would've been front page news. Poor little pup, RIP.
Mind you, why do people buy border collies when they've no idea how to look after them? My two were hard work, 25 hours a day! Not an easy breed to keep sane but people get them & they end up climbing the walls with frustration.

Yes Lisa I would bet odds on that if it was Staff it would be headline news.
Border collies are so brilliant at what they do (herding sheep, being obedience dogs etc) that unfortunately many people think that it is a shoo-in that if they get a border collie they will automatically be the perfect dog, forgetting that they are very energetic dogs and need constant work and training to achieve the perfection that they see on the TV.
Poor pup, he was obviously frustrated.

OMG, poor dog, so young too . Every dog needs socialising and exercise, but dogs like Border Collies do well when they feel like they're working all the time. Why would you get a dog and not do any research on it? You're willing to spend the money on something/someone you'll neglect the needs of? Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous because, as you say, this won't be in the news.

do not even get me started on it. My cousin who has never had a dog got a BC cause it was free to good home (a farmer didnt know his bitch was perggo) and a few weeks later she called me begging me to take it away cause she coudlnt be arsed with it anymore and it was being snappy to her kid and anytime her kid slapped it it made it worse.....I WONDER WHY
she doesnt walk it cause "the stupid thing wont walk on the lead" (and my cousin is a lazy bitch)
i don't speak to her anymore, and honestly i dont even know if she has it anymore because of it, but if she does its a total time bomb.

RIP little fella , none of our BC's were ever aggressive apart from being protective over us and we worked them , played with them and they followed us everywhere

That is so sad, and once again all down to a stupid stupid owner.
I don't really have many words for this as it's angered me to tears. RIP poor lil chap.

It always breaks my heart to read these things, it's the owners that should be pts not the dog.

R.I.P poor dog you never stood a chance , im unlucky enough to have neighbours either side of me who also have no idea how to raise and treat a dog, one has a Springer Spaniel the poor soul never goes out of the door expect into the back garden, they went away on holiday a few months back for a week the guy's Mother aged 72 was calling round once a day to feed him and let him into garden , he went stir crazy after 4 days barking the house down, i went round to his parents house and insisted they keep him at theirs till her son and family came home , they did this, i then played hell with my neighbour on his return , some folk are not fit to keep dogs .

The story is so sad. Anyway it worried me a little as I am going to have my first staffy soon.
She's only around 11 weeks now, and my hubby has a bit of experience as his parents had staffies (but most of them after he left home).
Please advise me on what to do to ensure my pet is trained properly. My friends that are giving her to us will help us raise her.
I am just terrified to make a mistake - I could not stand the idea of doing something wrong and my dog is put down because of me ! that's a nightmare!

Re: I bet this won't make the press!!!
We got our staff at 16 weeks when the previous owners weren't allowed to keep him. He was already trained to sit and a few basic bits and we were very lucky that he has destroyed very little of our house. He's ate a couple of dog beds but has never shown any aggression to our children. There is loads of puppy classes out there but Dext was too old by the time we got him so we had a one on one dog trainer come out to keep us on track x

Re: I bet this won't make the press!!!
This makes me so sad! Hate when stupid people are allowed to own pets. Serious case of "someone with a dog" rather a dog owner.
Raising and training a pup is a lot harder than i thought it would have been but it is a must if you want it to be a stable member of society, specially if you choose a working dog that needs a purpose!
Poor wee thing!
R.I.P little pup!
