Obediance Class LOL Empty Obediance Class LOL

Post by caz64 Thu Oct 11 2012, 12:46

Well Dusty went to her first training class last night Smile she was met with "Oh she's a Staffy!! from the lady running it. All the other dog owners came and said hello. Then we started the class where because she does not walk to heel (my fault not enough discipline on lead) lady said well that's Staffs for you! clown then came to obedience of a different type, waiting, recall and through the tunnel. Dusty excelled did all three to perfection. Big Grin by the end of the class I think that the trainer liked her a little and I am such a stubborn cow that we will be going again to prove that Dusty can walk nicely and she will be the star of the class. Was going to jack it but won't give trainer the satisfaction Crying or Very sad so how can you help??? advice on walking to heel on the lead. Pllleeeeeeaaaaase Tongues

Everytime she pulls get her to stop and sit, even if it's every few steps. You don't get anywhere fast, but they soon get the message if they pull infront they have to stop again. Smile x

As soon as she pulls stop and turn around and walk in the opposite direction. You could also use a canny collar which is like the gentle leader, its available at amazon.

Keep at it, please dont give it up.

There are several methods, stop and turn didn't work for Taz, clipping the lead on the front of her harness (that made her keep to heel) and repeating heel command and using the look at me command with treats worked ..

although she can still be a bugger when something new and exciting appears or people don't take the responsibility to keep their unleashed dog away from us ...

This is exactly what we do with Ralph and it does start to pay off.

When he has been walking nicely for a while, I will give him a treat too as an added bonus, and plenty of praise.

Stopping and sitting worked best for us, though Loki was never too bad with pulling. Dogs like walking and exploring; stop and they'll soon learn to be patient. Good of you to keep with it Smile the dog classes I've been to have all loved Staffs.

I agree with the stopping and turning, though what seemed to work better for Callie (and what I still go back to) is to walk her with a mozzarella stick in my hand right in front of her nose, letting her nibble every so often.

She loves cheese but I'm sure whatever Dusty likes would work.

I've had a similar experience - Bacon was kicked out of puppy class for being to rough and could not focus! He's slowly starting to learn his manners at 7 months. He loves meeting other dogs!!!

At first I was worried, then upset, now i'm at ease with it. Don't feel like you have to prove anything to anyone. I could care less what people think of Bacon nowadays as long as I'm happy with his behavior and development! You're gonna get nasty looks, remarks regardless of how well behaved your little one is. You'll also get compliments too!

It comes with the territory... Good luck and keep at the classes! Big Grin
