Hello Staffie community
Hello everyone. I've been reading all the posts for some time and am excited to say that we are going to welcome an affectionate and handsome staffie into our family on Saturday. He is 4 years old and was found abandoned and underweight and had been in the dogs home since 07 August. We haven't had a dog for ten years (since Daisy) and although I'm finding it a little daunting I'm also really looking forward to him becoming a member of our family. I'd love to share my experiences with you all and of course, will welcome any advice. We are a family of five and can't wait for him to arrive this weekend. I was wondering what experiences some of you have had when rehoming an older dog?

Hello and welcome, i've no experience with re homing an older dog my self but as with any other it will take time for them to adjust to new surroundings and to get used to family life, so given time and patience he should settle in just as well as any dog would

Hi & welcome.
Well done on rescuing, I'm sure you'll be repaid 1000 times with love & licks!
I've not rescued for years, but all I'd say is give him a little space when you first get him so that he can settle in his own time.
Good luck - it'd be lovely to see some pics when you get him!

Re: Hello Staffie community
Thanks Janey, Steve and Caryll. This is our first experience of rescuing a dog. Although we took our previous dog Daisy in when she was a few weeks old when the owners didn't want her. Our staffies name is Morgan and we are picking him up on Saturday morning and have decided to take him for a walk before taking him home to meet the family. The home said he was extremely laid back and hasn't shown any kind of aggression since he was taken in, so here's hoping it will be a smooth adoption....

Re: Hello Staffie community
Hello and welcome to the forum from me and the kids
We have rehomed an older dog but not a Staff , he was a BC X but same approach always has to be adopted, let him find his feet and give him plenty of space to settle. Decide on your ground rules from Day 1 , ie furniture, beds etc and stick to them , don't give any leaway or it will confuse him. You will have to accept that he will have quirks from his past life , good or bad and you will not be able to change him overnight. Our old boy for instance used to constantly go round and round in circles due to being confined in a small area (we thought) , go mental through the night if he heard a noise , and go mental at Eastenders and Corrie (walkie time ??) the latter 2 stayed , the first one he kept it up but much less as he grew more confident with us

Welcome
Can't give any advice really, but like with all dogs, give them a bit of time to get used to their surroundings and be consistent and patient. Congrats on the soon-to-be addition to your family, and take lots of pictures when he's settled in, we love pictures

Can't help as we got Cal as a puppy. Morgan sounds like he has a great temperament--I'm sure he'll settle in with some time. Keep us posted

Re: Hello Staffie community
Here is Morgan! We collected him on Saturday and I can't believe how well he has settled in.
He was a little quiet during the day and we had an awful moment when we gave him some biscuits which scattered over the floor. I asked hubby to pass me the broom - when he did Morgan charged out of the kitchen, absolutely terrified. We think maybe he was hit with a broom
He's been here five days now and is the most loving, kind and gentle dog we have ever met. The kids love him and he cuddles with all of us all of the time. We've booked him in for some obedience training as it's pretty evident he's never been walked. He hates a lead around his neck so he has a red harness instead. He also won't go into the back garden (wonder if he was kept outside). He slept on the cold laminate flooring when he arrived but has now moved onto the rug, we're hoping he will eventually make it to his big comfy bed
He is an absolute joy and we can't believe we were lucky enough to find him. My daughter summed it up yesterday when she said 'Morgan is having the last laugh'

Re: Hello Staffie community
Morgan has been with us for 8 days now and is still behaving very well. However, we set off today to take him to meet some other dogs as he starts obedience training next month and the trainer thought it would be a good idea. We decided to take a short cut through the park......bad idea. Within a couple of minutes a large dog approached him (this dog was not on a lead) and to our horror Morgan tried to attack it. My OH luckily had already prepared for this and was able to pull Morgan away pretty quickly. The other dog was totally unphased by it all. The other dogs owner was an old guy with walking sticks who was taking forever to pass by but he wouldn't call his dog back. He just said that if Morgan attacked again his dog would hold his own. In the end OH picked Morgan up and carried him out of the park. It was really scary, the dogs home said he was dog friendly and when we met him he was with another dog so I'm not sure why he reacted like he did. We're going to try and teach him the watch me command and stick to the streets for a bit
